Course Overview

The Warehouse Management & Operations Training Course equips warehouse, logistics, and supply chain professionals with the practical knowledge and tools needed to run safe, efficient, accurate, and cost-effective warehouse operations. In government entities, ministries, banks, healthcare organizations, manufacturing and retail companies, and large corporations, warehouses play a central role in ensuring that materials, supplies, and products are available when and where they are needed. The way a warehouse is designed, organized, and operated directly affects service levels, operating costs, stock accuracy, and the safety of people and assets. Many warehouses operate below their potential. Layouts may have evolved over time without a clear design logic, fast-moving items may be stored in hard-to-reach locations, receiving and dispatch areas may be congested, picking methods may be inefficient, and space may be poorly used even when the warehouse appears full. Warehouse management systems may be underused, productivity may not be measured, safety risks related to material handling equipment and racking may be underestimated, and staff may lack standard procedures and training. This course takes a practical, end-to-end view of warehouse management. Participants learn the strategic role of the warehouse within the supply chain, warehouse layout and flow design, storage systems and space utilization, and slotting strategies that place items in the most suitable locations. The program covers core warehouse processes, including receiving, inspection, putaway, storage, order picking, packing, dispatch, cross-docking, and returns, as well as material handling equipment, labor planning and productivity standards, warehouse management systems, barcoding, RFID, and automation. Participants also learn warehouse health, safety, and security requirements, storage of hazardous and temperature-sensitive materials, lean and 5S practices, warehouse performance indicators and cost analysis, and the considerations involved in outsourcing to third-party logistics providers. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with layout exercises, calculations, case studies, and video demonstrations. Participants leave with a warehouse layout and flow assessment, a slotting analysis, standard operating procedure outlines for key processes, a warehouse safety checklist, a warehouse KPI dashboard design, and an improvement plan for their warehouse operations.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the strategic role of warehousing in supply chain performance, service delivery, and cost management on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the current layout, flow, and space utilization of the participant's warehouse and identify priority improvement areas.
  • Design warehouse layouts and material flows that reduce travel distances, congestion, and handling.
  • Assess storage systems and racking options and select solutions suitable for different item characteristics and volumes.
  • Apply slotting strategies based on item velocity, size, weight, and picking frequency to improve productivity.
  • Implement standard procedures for receiving, inspection, putaway, storage, picking, packing, dispatch, and returns.
  • Evaluate order picking methods, including discrete, batch, zone, and wave picking, and select the most suitable approach for different order profiles.
  • Develop labor planning and productivity standards for key warehouse activities.
  • Assess the use of warehouse management systems, barcoding, RFID, and automation to improve accuracy, visibility, and efficiency.
  • Apply warehouse health, safety, and security requirements, including material handling equipment safety, racking inspection, fire prevention, and storage of hazardous and temperature-sensitive materials.
  • Implement lean and 5S practices to reduce waste and improve organization and discipline in the warehouse.
  • Design a warehouse KPI dashboard and improvement plan for the participant's operation by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for warehouse managers, stores managers, warehouse supervisors and team leaders, logistics and distribution managers, supply chain professionals, and inventory controllers responsible for day-to-day warehouse operations and performance. It is also relevant for storekeepers and senior warehouse staff preparing for supervisory roles, and for operations and facilities managers who oversee storage and distribution activities. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing central stores, emergency and strategic stocks, and distribution to multiple sites; in healthcare organizations managing medical supplies and pharmaceuticals with temperature, expiry, and traceability requirements; in banks and financial institutions managing central supplies, IT equipment, and branch distribution; and in manufacturing, retail, e-commerce, utilities, and service organizations managing raw materials, spare parts, finished goods, and customer orders. Health and safety professionals, procurement and supply chain planners, ERP and warehouse systems specialists, and managers evaluating outsourcing to logistics service providers will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how warehouse design and operations affect service levels, costs, and inventory accuracy.
  • Assess an existing warehouse layout and identify bottlenecks, wasted space, and unnecessary movement.
  • Propose layout and flow improvements that increase capacity and productivity.
  • Select appropriate storage and racking systems for different types of items.
  • Conduct a slotting analysis and relocate items to improve picking efficiency.
  • Apply best practices for receiving, putaway, picking, packing, dispatch, and returns.
  • Choose the most effective picking method for their order profile.
  • Estimate labor requirements and set productivity standards for warehouse activities.
  • Use warehouse management systems and identification technologies to improve accuracy and traceability.
  • Identify warehouse safety hazards and apply controls for equipment, racking, fire, and hazardous materials.
  • Apply 5S and lean principles to improve organization and reduce waste.
  • Measure warehouse performance using KPIs such as dock-to-stock time, order accuracy, pick rate, on-time dispatch, space utilization, and cost per order.
