Course Overview

The Vendor Management & Supplier Performance Evaluation Training Course equips procurement, contracts, and supply chain professionals with practical systems and tools for registering, qualifying, evaluating, monitoring, and developing vendors in a fair, consistent, and evidence-based way. In government entities, ministries, healthcare systems, banks, manufacturing, retail, and service organizations, and large corporations, the quality of goods, services, and projects depends heavily on selecting capable vendors and holding them accountable for performance throughout the contract. A structured vendor management system protects the organization, supports value for money, and encourages vendors to perform at their best. Many organizations struggle with vendor management in practice. Vendor registration may focus on documents rather than capability, approved vendor lists may contain inactive, duplicated, or poorly performing vendors, and pre-award evaluations may rely on inconsistent criteria. After award, performance evaluation may be irregular, subjective, or based on the opinion of a single user, with little supporting data. Poor performance may not be documented, corrective actions may not be followed up, and decisions to suspend or remove vendors may be difficult to defend. As a result, the same performance problems recur and good vendors are not recognized. This course provides a complete, practical framework for vendor management and supplier performance evaluation. Participants learn the vendor lifecycle, including registration, prequalification, onboarding, vendor master data management, and maintenance of approved vendor lists. The program covers pre-award vendor evaluation across technical, quality, financial, health and safety, and compliance dimensions, the design of evaluation criteria and weighting, and supplier capability assessments and audits. It then addresses post-award performance evaluation, including KPI selection, weighted scorecards, rating scales, evaluation frequency, data sources, and stakeholder input, as well as vendor performance review meetings, nonconformance management, supplier corrective action requests, performance improvement plans, contractual remedies and incentives, vendor rating and classification, and fair and well-documented processes for warning, suspension, and removal of vendors. Participants also learn how to use systems and reporting to support vendor management decisions. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with evaluation exercises, scorecard design, case studies, and review of sample vendor documentation. Participants leave with a vendor registration and prequalification checklist, a weighted evaluation criteria model, a supplier performance scorecard, a corrective action request template, a vendor performance review agenda, a vendor rating and approved vendor list policy outline, and an improvement plan for vendor management in their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of vendor management and supplier performance evaluation in protecting quality, value for money, and service continuity on Day 1.
  • Evaluate the participant's current vendor registration, evaluation, and performance monitoring practices and identify priority gaps.
  • Design vendor registration and prequalification requirements that assess capability, capacity, quality, financial stability, and compliance.
  • Implement vendor master data management and approved vendor list maintenance practices that keep vendor information accurate and current.
  • Develop pre-award evaluation criteria and weighting models that are objective, transparent, and relevant to the goods or services being procured.
  • Apply supplier capability assessments and supplier audit techniques to verify vendor claims and readiness.
  • Design balanced supplier performance scorecards covering quality, delivery, cost, service, responsiveness, compliance, and health and safety.
  • Establish performance evaluation procedures that define frequency, data sources, evaluators, rating scales, and documentation requirements.
  • Implement nonconformance management, supplier corrective action requests, and performance improvement plans to address underperformance.
  • Apply contractual remedies and incentives, including service credits, liquidated damages, and recognition of strong performance, in a fair and consistent way.
  • Develop vendor rating, classification, warning, suspension, and removal procedures that are fair, well documented, and defensible.
  • Design an improvement plan for vendor management and supplier performance evaluation in the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for procurement managers, vendor management and supplier registration professionals, contract managers, category managers, buyers, and supply chain professionals responsible for selecting, qualifying, and monitoring vendors. It is also relevant for quality assurance professionals who conduct supplier audits, project managers and technical staff who evaluate vendor performance, and members of tender and evaluation committees. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing vendor registration, qualification, and performance under public procurement regulations; in healthcare systems evaluating suppliers of medicines, medical devices, and outsourced services; in banks and financial institutions monitoring technology, facilities, and outsourced service providers; and in manufacturing, retail, utilities, construction, and service organizations that rely on contractors and suppliers for quality and timely delivery. Internal auditors, compliance officers, and managers who approve vendor listing and removal decisions will also benefit from the course.
