Course Overview

The Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Training Course equips procurement, supply chain, and contract professionals with the strategies, tools, and interpersonal skills needed to build and manage supplier relationships that deliver reliable performance, continuous improvement, innovation, and long-term value. In government entities, ministries, healthcare systems, banks, manufacturing, retail, and service organizations, and large corporations, a significant share of service quality, cost, and operational continuity depends on the performance of external suppliers. How these relationships are structured and managed after the contract is signed often determines whether the expected value is delivered. Many organizations invest considerable effort in sourcing and tendering but manage suppliers reactively once contracts are awarded. All suppliers may be treated the same regardless of their importance, performance reviews may be irregular or focused only on complaints, relationship ownership may be unclear, and communication may be limited to escalations and disputes. Opportunities for joint improvement, cost reduction, and innovation are missed, and organizations may be unaware of how suppliers view them as customers. In the public sector and regulated environments, SRM must also be carried out in a way that maintains fairness, transparency, and integrity. This course provides a structured and practical approach to supplier relationship management. Participants learn the purpose and value of SRM, how it differs from and complements contract management, and how to segment suppliers using tools such as the Kraljic portfolio matrix and the supplier preferencing model. The program covers selecting the right relationship model for each segment, establishing SRM governance with clear roles, executive sponsorship, and review cadences, and managing supplier performance using balanced scorecards and structured business reviews. It also addresses supplier development and joint improvement, value creation and innovation with strategic suppliers, trust and communication, negotiation and conflict resolution within ongoing relationships, becoming a customer of choice, collaborative relationship management principles informed by ISO 44001, managing risk within supplier relationships, relationship transitions and exits, measuring the value of SRM, and maintaining integrity and fair treatment throughout. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with segmentation exercises, role plays, case studies, and group workshops. Participants leave with a supplier segmentation matrix, an SRM governance model, a supplier scorecard, a business review agenda template, a supplier development plan, a relationship plan for a strategic supplier, and an SRM implementation roadmap for their organization.

It is also relevant for business unit managers, technical and operational leads, and project managers who work closely with key suppliers and service providers on a daily basis. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries and government entities managing strategic contracts, outsourced services, and public-private partnerships; in healthcare systems working with suppliers of medicines, medical devices, and outsourced services; in banks and financial institutions managing technology providers, outsourcing partners, and critical service suppliers; and in manufacturing, retail, utilities, construction, and service organizations that depend on supplier performance for quality, cost, and continuity. Senior managers acting as executive sponsors for strategic suppliers, and risk, compliance, and finance professionals involved in supplier oversight, will also benefit from the course.
