Course Overview

The Finance for HR Professionals Training Course equips HR professionals, HR business partners, and people managers with the financial knowledge and practical skills needed to understand financial information, manage HR budgets and costs, build sound business cases for people investments, and engage confidently with finance colleagues and senior leaders. HR increasingly influences major financial decisions, including workforce costs, compensation and benefits, recruitment, learning, and restructuring, yet many HR professionals lack the financial fluency to quantify the cost and value of people initiatives or to hold their own in budget and investment discussions. Financial literacy enables HR to be a credible strategic partner, make better decisions, and demonstrate the return on human capital investment. The course covers finance for HR professionals from fundamentals to business cases and value, using HR-relevant examples throughout and assuming no prior financial background. Participants learn why financial literacy matters for HR, basic finance and accounting concepts, and how to read and interpret the main financial statements and key financial ratios at a practical level. The program then addresses the economics of the organization and how HR affects financial performance, workforce cost analysis, including total employment cost, fully loaded cost, and the cost of turnover, absence, and vacancies, and HR budgeting, including building, managing, forecasting, and controlling the HR budget and headcount and personnel cost budgeting. Participants also learn capital and operating expenditure as they relate to HR, costing and pricing HR services and programs, building business cases and calculating return on investment for HR initiatives such as recruitment, learning, engagement, and wellbeing, compensation and benefits from a financial perspective, financial aspects of restructuring and workforce decisions, HR and finance metrics and human capital reporting, and communicating financial information persuasively to finance and executives. The course is delivered through practical, HR-focused exercises, workforce cost and budgeting calculations, business case and return on investment workshops, and case studies. Participants leave with an HR budget and headcount cost template, a workforce cost and cost-of-turnover calculator, an HR business case and return on investment template, an HR metrics and human capital reporting guide, and a finance terminology glossary for HR.
