Course Overview

  • Governance structures, committees, reporting lines, and decision-making authority.
  • Aligning information security strategy with business objectives and organizational risk appetite.
  • Overview of recognized frameworks: ISO/IEC 27001, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and COBIT.
  • Practical Exercise: Assess a hypothetical organization's governance structure, identify accountability gaps, and recommend improvements to roles and reporting arrangements.
Day 2

Governance Frameworks, Policies, and Accountability

  • Designing an information security governance framework suited to organizational size and complexity.
  • Developing information security policies, standards, procedures, and supporting guidelines.
  • Establishing policy ownership, approval processes, communication, and periodic review.
  • Defining security responsibilities through governance charters, responsibility matrices, and escalation paths.
  • Integrating security governance with enterprise architecture, IT governance, and business processes.
  • Managing policy exceptions, control deviations, and formal risk acceptance.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a governance responsibility matrix and outline a policy approval and exception-management process for a sample organization.

  • Defining risk appetite, risk tolerance, ownership, and escalation thresholds.
  • Integrating information security risks into enterprise risk registers and management reporting.
  • Evaluating legal, regulatory, contractual, and industry-specific security requirements.
  • Governance oversight of third-party, supplier, cloud, and outsourcing risks.
  • Monitoring audit findings, corrective actions, control effectiveness, and compliance evidence.
  • Practical Exercise: Evaluate a sample information security risk register, prioritize governance-level risks, and prepare recommendations for executive review.
Day 4

Performance Measurement, Incident Governance, and Assurance

  • Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) and key risk indicators (KRIs) for information security governance.
  • Developing executive dashboards and concise risk reporting for senior management.
  • Governance responsibilities during cybersecurity incidents, including escalation and decision authority.
  • Oversight of incident response, business continuity, recovery, and post-incident reviews.
  • Internal audit, independent assurance, governance reviews, and evidence-based evaluation.
  • Reporting security control weaknesses, overdue remediation, and accepted residual risks.
  • Practical Exercise: Prepare an executive information security dashboard and incident escalation brief based on a simulated cybersecurity event.
Day 5

Governance Maturity and Continuous Improvement

  • Assessing information security governance maturity using structured assessment criteria.
