Course Overview

The Agile Project Management Training Course equips project managers, team leaders, product owners, and project team members with the principles, frameworks, and practical techniques needed to plan and deliver projects using agile approaches that respond effectively to change and deliver value early and often. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, telecommunications, technology, and service organizations, and large corporations, many projects, particularly digital, product development, service improvement, and innovation initiatives, involve evolving requirements, high uncertainty, and a strong need for user feedback. Agile project management provides a structured yet flexible way to manage such work. Many teams adopt agile terminology without achieving agile results. Daily meetings and sprints may be introduced while scope remains fixed and planned in detail upfront, backlogs may be long lists of tasks rather than prioritized items of value, user stories may lack clear acceptance criteria, and teams may commit to more work than they can complete. Roles may be unclear, with project managers, product owners, and team leads overlapping or leaving gaps, stakeholders may not engage in reviews, and retrospectives may not lead to real improvement. In organizations with strong governance, compliance, and contractual requirements, teams may also struggle to reconcile agile practices with reporting, budgeting, and approval processes. This course provides a practical, hands-on introduction to agile project management. Participants learn agile values and principles, how agile differs from predictive approaches, and how to decide when agile or hybrid approaches are most appropriate. The program covers the most widely used agile frameworks and practices, including Scrum, Kanban, and lean principles, and the roles of product owners, Scrum Masters or agile team leads, development teams, and the evolving role of the project manager. Participants then learn how to create a product vision and roadmap, build and prioritize a product backlog, write user stories with acceptance criteria, define a definition of done, estimate using relative sizing and story points, and plan releases and iterations. The course also addresses running sprint planning, daily coordination, reviews, and retrospectives, visualizing work and managing flow with Kanban boards and work-in-progress limits, tracking progress with velocity, burndown, burnup, and cumulative flow charts, managing stakeholders, risk, and quality in agile projects, applying servant leadership and supporting self-organizing teams, applying agile within governance, contracting, and regulatory environments, an overview of scaling approaches, and planning practical adoption on participants' projects. This course builds practical agile skills and is not an official certification program; participants interested in agile certifications should confirm requirements with the relevant certifying bodies. The course is delivered through an interactive, experiential approach with team simulations, backlog and story writing workshops, estimation and planning exercises, Kanban simulations, and case studies. Participants leave with a delivery approach selection guide, a product vision and roadmap template, a product backlog and user story template, a definition of done checklist, an estimation and release planning worksheet, sprint event agendas, an agile metrics dashboard template, and an agile adoption plan for their project or team.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze agile values and principles and how agile approaches differ from predictive project management on Day 1.
  • Determine when agile, predictive, or hybrid approaches are most appropriate based on project characteristics and constraints.
  • Apply widely used agile frameworks and practices, including Scrum, Kanban, and lean principles.
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of product owners, Scrum Masters or agile team leads, development teams, and project managers in agile projects.
  • Develop a product vision and product roadmap aligned with business objectives and stakeholder needs.
  • Build, refine, and prioritize a product backlog using value-based prioritization techniques.
  • Write effective user stories with clear acceptance criteria and establish a definition of done.
  • Apply relative estimation techniques, including story points, to plan releases and iterations.
  • Facilitate sprint planning, daily coordination, sprint reviews, and retrospectives that produce actionable outcomes.
  • Visualize work and manage flow using Kanban boards and work-in-progress limits.
  • Track and report agile project progress using velocity, burndown, burnup, and cumulative flow charts.
  • Manage stakeholders, risks, quality, governance, contracts, and scaling considerations in agile projects and develop an agile adoption plan for the participant's project or team by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for project managers, team leaders, product owners, business analysts, developers, and project team members who want to plan and deliver projects using agile approaches. It is also highly relevant for PMO staff, functional managers, and stakeholders who work with agile teams and need to understand how agile projects are planned, governed, and reported. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, and public authorities delivering digital services and improvement initiatives; in banks and financial institutions delivering digital channels, products, and technology projects; in healthcare systems delivering digital health and process improvement projects; and in telecommunications, technology, energy, utilities, and service organizations delivering product, system, and innovation projects. Professionals transitioning from traditional project management to agile or hybrid roles will particularly benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the agile mindset and how it differs from traditional project management.
  • Choose an appropriate delivery approach for different types of projects.
  • Apply Scrum and Kanban practices effectively in real projects.
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities within agile teams.
  • Create a clear product vision and roadmap.
  • Build and prioritize a backlog that focuses on value.
  • Write user stories that the team can deliver and stakeholders can accept.
  • Estimate work and plan releases and sprints realistically.
  • Run productive sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Manage flow and limit work in progress to improve delivery.
  • Track and communicate progress using agile metrics.
  • Apply agile within organizational governance and plan practical adoption.
