Course Overview

The Well Stimulation: Acidizing & Hydraulic Fracturing Training Course equips petroleum, production, completion, and reservoir engineers, stimulation supervisors, and technical staff with the practical knowledge needed to select, design, execute, and evaluate matrix acidizing, acid fracturing, and hydraulic fracturing treatments. Many wells produce well below their potential, either because of formation damage near the wellbore or because the reservoir rock is too tight to flow at economic rates. A correctly diagnosed and designed stimulation treatment can remove positive skin, create a high-conductivity flow path, and raise the productivity index several times over, while a poorly chosen one can waste chemicals and rig time, damage the formation further, or break into water and gas zones. The course covers the full stimulation workflow. Participants learn formation damage mechanisms, skin and productivity index, and candidate selection using well test, production, and core data. The program then addresses matrix acidizing in sandstone and carbonate formations, including acid systems, additives, diversion, treatment design and placement, and the risks of secondary precipitation, emulsions, and sludge, followed by acid fracturing. Participants also examine hydraulic fracturing, including rock mechanics and in-situ stress, fracture geometry, fracturing fluids and proppants, pumping schedules, fracture modeling concepts, and mini-frac and diagnostic fracture injection test interpretation, as well as execution, quality control, pressure control, chemical handling, flowback and produced water management, multistage completion concepts, and post-treatment evaluation and economics. The course is delivered through case studies, design calculations, treatment chart interpretation, and stimulation planning workshops. Participants leave with a stimulation candidate screening checklist, an acid system selection guide, a fracture design review template, a job quality control and HSE checklist, and a post-treatment evaluation and economics template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze how formation damage, skin, and productivity index determine the need for stimulation on Day 1.
  • Select stimulation candidates using production history, pressure transient results, nodal analysis, and core data.
  • Identify formation damage mechanisms, including fines migration, clay swelling, emulsions, water blocks, scale, and fluid invasion.
  • Design sandstone acid treatments, including preflush, hydrofluoric acid main stage, and overflush, while managing precipitation risks.
  • Design carbonate acid treatments using wormholing principles, optimum injection rate, and retarded, emulsified, and viscoelastic acids.
  • Select acid additives, including corrosion inhibitors, iron control agents, surfactants, and anti-sludge agents, based on compatibility testing.
  • Apply mechanical and chemical diversion methods and real-time treatment monitoring to achieve uniform acid placement.
  • Compare acid fracturing with propped hydraulic fracturing and select the appropriate method for carbonate reservoirs.
  • Apply rock mechanics, in-situ stress, and fracture geometry concepts to hydraulic fracture design, including fluid, proppant, and pumping schedule selection.
  • Interpret mini-frac and diagnostic fracture injection test data to estimate closure pressure, fluid efficiency, and leakoff behavior.
  • Plan safe stimulation execution, including pressure control, chemical handling, quality control, flowback, and produced water management.
  • Evaluate stimulation results and economics using post-treatment production, pressure, and well test data by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for petroleum engineers, production engineers, completion engineers, reservoir engineers, and stimulation and well site supervisors who select, design, or supervise acidizing and fracturing treatments. It is also relevant for production chemists, geomechanics specialists, well intervention engineers, HSE professionals supporting pumping operations, and asset managers who approve stimulation programs and budgets. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil and gas companies developing carbonate, sandstone, and tight reservoirs, pumping and well services companies, and regulators and government entities overseeing stimulation operations and produced water handling.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how formation damage and skin reduce well productivity.
  • Select wells that will respond profitably to stimulation.
  • Choose between matrix acidizing, acid fracturing, and hydraulic fracturing.
  • Design sandstone and carbonate acid treatments with suitable additives.
  • Recognize and prevent precipitation, emulsion, and sludge problems.
  • Apply diversion methods to place acid where it is needed.
  • Apply rock mechanics and in-situ stress concepts to fracture design.
  • Select fracturing fluids, proppants, and pumping schedules for a given reservoir.
  • Interpret mini-frac and diagnostic fracture injection test results.
  • Plan safe treatment execution, quality control, and flowback.
  • Explain the main multistage completion options for fractured wells.
  • Evaluate treatment results and stimulation economics to improve future decisions.
