Course Overview

The Well Integrity Management Systems Training Course equips well integrity, production, and petroleum engineers, supervisors, and technical authorities with a structured, practical approach to keeping wells under control throughout their life, from the basis of design to final abandonment. Well integrity is the application of technical, operational, and organizational solutions to reduce the risk of uncontrolled release of formation fluids, and a single degraded barrier in an ageing well stock can lead to sustained casing pressure, surface leaks, lost production, environmental damage, or a major incident. Many operators now manage hundreds of wells of different ages, designs, and failure histories, which demands a formal management system. The course focuses on how well integrity is managed in practice, not on how wells are drilled or intervened upon, which separate courses cover. Participants learn the life cycle approach set out in ISO 16530, well integrity management system elements, roles, and competence, well barrier envelopes, barrier element acceptance criteria, and the preparation and use of well barrier schematics. The program then addresses annulus pressure management, including thermal, operator-imposed, and sustained casing pressure, maximum allowable annulus surface pressure (MAASP) calculation, and diagnostic testing, followed by integrity threats such as corrosion, erosion, and cement and wellhead degradation, valve and barrier testing, well integrity categorization, risk assessment of failed barriers, deviation management, key performance indicators, ageing wells, and suspension and abandonment principles. The course is delivered through barrier schematic exercises, annulus pressure calculations, diagnostic case studies, and well stock review workshops. Participants leave with a barrier schematic template, a MAASP worksheet, an annulus pressure diagnostic flowchart, a test and inspection schedule, and a well stock risk ranking template.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain well integrity, its life cycle phases, and the consequences of barrier failure for safety, the environment, and production on Day 1.
  • Establish the elements of a well integrity management system, including policy, roles, responsibilities, competence, well handover, and documentation.
  • Apply the life cycle approach to well integrity described in ISO 16530 and compare it with other recognized industry guidance.
  • Define primary and secondary well barrier envelopes and the barrier elements that form them for producing, injection, and suspended wells.
  • Specify acceptance criteria, verification methods, and test frequencies for well barrier elements.
  • Prepare and maintain well barrier schematics that reflect the current status of each well.
  • Distinguish thermal, operator-imposed, and sustained casing pressure and set annulus pressure operating limits.
  • Calculate maximum allowable annulus surface pressure and apply bleed-down and build-up tests to diagnose annulus pressure.
  • Assess integrity threats, including corrosion, erosion, cement degradation, wellhead and tree failures, and valve leakage.
  • Apply well integrity categorization and risk assessment to prioritize failed or degraded barriers.
  • Manage deviations, changes, and remedial actions through a controlled review and approval process.
  • Evaluate well integrity performance, the ageing well stock, and suspension and abandonment requirements to sustain integrity by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for well integrity engineers and focal points, production and petroleum engineers, completion and well intervention engineers, and well site and production supervisors responsible for operating wells within safe limits. It is also relevant for wellhead and well services technicians, corrosion and materials engineers, technical authorities and asset managers who approve deviations, HSE and process safety professionals, and engineers taking over well integrity responsibilities. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil and gas companies operating onshore and offshore well stocks, gas storage and injection operators, oilfield service companies, and regulators and government entities overseeing well integrity.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what well integrity means at each stage of the well life cycle.
  • Contribute to building or improving a well integrity management system.
  • Identify the barrier envelopes and elements in any well.
  • Prepare and review accurate well barrier schematics.
  • Define acceptance criteria and test requirements for barrier elements.
  • Recognize sources of annulus pressure and respond correctly.
  • Calculate MAASP and set annulus operating limits.
  • Interpret bleed-down and build-up tests to locate leak paths.
  • Assess corrosion, erosion, and other integrity threats in wells.
  • Categorize wells and prioritize remedial actions based on risk.
  • Manage deviations and changes without weakening barriers.
  • Track well integrity performance and plan for ageing and abandoned wells.
