Course Overview

The Well Completion Design Training Course equips completion, petroleum, and production engineers with the practical knowledge needed to design completions that deliver the required production or injection safely, reliably, and economically over the full life of the well. The completion is the permanent interface between the reservoir and the surface facilities, and it is expensive and difficult to change once installed. Design decisions on tubing size, materials, equipment, perforating, and sand control therefore determine well deliverability, integrity, intervention access, and life cycle cost for many years. The course follows the completion design process from the design basis to the final design review. Participants learn how reservoir, fluid, production, and intervention requirements are translated into a completion architecture, how inflow and outflow performance and nodal analysis are used to size tubing, and how completion fluids are selected. The program then addresses tubing stress analysis, including load cases, temperature and pressure effects, tubing movement and packer forces, buckling, triaxial design, annular pressure buildup, and material and connection selection for corrosive environments. Participants also examine the selection of completion equipment, including production packers, subsurface safety valves, landing nipples, sliding sleeves, artificial lift and chemical injection interfaces, and tubing hanger and tree interfaces. Further sessions cover perforation design and perforating strategy, sand production prediction and sand control selection, multizone and intelligent completions with interval control valves, inflow control devices, and permanent downhole monitoring. Rig operations and later well interventions are covered in other courses and are referred to here only where they affect design. The course is delivered through design calculations, equipment schematics, case studies of completion failures, and a design workshop. Participants leave with a completion design basis template, a tubing load case checklist, an equipment selection matrix, a sand control selection guide, and a completion design review checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Define a completion design basis from reservoir, fluid, production, injection, and intervention requirements on Day 1.
  • Select a completion architecture, including open hole or cased hole, single or multizone, and lower and upper completion.
  • Apply nodal analysis to select tubing size, considering erosion, liquid loading, and future artificial lift.
  • Select completion fluids based on density, crystallization temperature, and formation compatibility.
  • Define tubing load cases for production, injection, shut-in, stimulation, and pressure testing.
  • Analyze piston, ballooning, buckling, and thermal effects on tubing and calculate packer forces.
  • Assess annular pressure buildup and select tubing materials and connections for corrosive service.
  • Select production packers, subsurface safety valves, landing nipples, sliding sleeves, and artificial lift interfaces.
  • Design perforating strategies, including gun systems, shot density, phasing, and underbalanced or overbalanced perforating.
  • Predict sand production risk and select sand control methods, including screens, gravel packs, and frac packs.
  • Design multizone and intelligent completions with interval control valves, inflow control devices, and downhole monitoring.
  • Prepare and review a complete completion design, including risks and the well barrier schematic, by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for completion engineers, petroleum and production engineers, well engineers, and drilling engineers who prepare or review completion designs and programs. It is also relevant for reservoir engineers who define production and injection requirements, well integrity engineers, completion supervisors, and materials and corrosion engineers who support material selection. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil and gas companies, oilfield service and completion equipment companies, and regulators and government entities that approve well designs and oversee well integrity. The course benefits most those who are moving into completion design roles, engineers who prepare design bases for new field developments, and professionals who need to challenge equipment proposals, tubing stress results, and sand control recommendations with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Prepare a completion design basis for new and existing production and injection wells.
  • Select a suitable completion architecture for the reservoir and well type.
  • Size production and injection tubing using inflow and outflow performance and nodal analysis.
  • Select completion fluids that suit the well and reservoir.
  • Define tubing load cases and apply appropriate design factors.
  • Calculate tubing movement, packer forces, and buckling effects.
  • Recognize annular pressure buildup risks and practical mitigation options.
  • Select tubing materials and connections for corrosive service.
  • Specify packers, safety valves, nipples, and sliding sleeves for the well conditions.
  • Design a perforating strategy that minimizes perforation damage.
  • Select sand control methods based on reservoir and well conditions.
  • Evaluate when intelligent completions and inflow control devices add value.
  • Review completion designs critically and identify key risks before installation.
