Course Overview

The Welding Procedure Qualification (ASME IX) for Static Equipment Engineers Training Course equips static equipment, mechanical, integrity, and inspection engineers with a practical understanding of how welding procedures and welder qualifications are developed, qualified, reviewed, and applied under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX. In oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, power, water, and industrial facilities, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, and storage tanks depend on sound welding for their safety and integrity. Static equipment engineers are frequently required to review and approve contractor and vendor welding documentation for new construction, repairs, and alterations, yet errors in welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification records are common and can compromise equipment integrity. The course focuses on applying ASME IX in practice. Participants learn the structure of the code, the relationship between Section IX and the construction and repair codes that invoke it, and the roles of welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, and welder and welding operator performance qualifications. The program covers essential, supplementary essential, and nonessential variables for common welding processes, P-Numbers, Group Numbers, F-Numbers, and A-Numbers, qualified thickness and diameter ranges, positions, preheat, post-weld heat treatment, heat input and toughness requirements, and the mechanical and nondestructive tests used for qualification. Participants then develop skills in reviewing and approving procedures and records, identifying common errors, applying requirements for repairs and alterations, and maintaining welding records and continuity. The course is delivered through code navigation exercises, worked examples, and practical reviews of sample welding documentation. Participants leave with a WPS and PQR review checklist, a variables and qualification range quick reference, a welder qualification review checklist, and a guide to common welding documentation errors. This course builds practical code application skills and is not an ASME certification program; participants should use the current edition of the code applicable to their projects.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the purpose, scope, and structure of ASME Section IX and its role in the integrity of static equipment on Day 1.
  • Explain the relationship between Section IX and the construction and repair codes that invoke it for pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers, and storage tanks.
  • Distinguish between welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, and welder and welding operator performance qualifications.
  • Apply essential, supplementary essential, and nonessential variables for common welding processes, including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW.
  • Apply P-Number, Group Number, F-Number, and A-Number groupings to base metal and filler metal qualification.
  • Determine qualified base metal thickness, weld deposit thickness, diameter, and position ranges from qualification test coupons.
  • Evaluate preheat, post-weld heat treatment, heat input, and impact toughness requirements and their effect on procedure qualification.
  • Interpret mechanical test requirements, including tensile, guided bend, and toughness tests, and acceptance criteria for procedure qualification.
  • Apply welder and welding operator performance qualification requirements, including test methods, qualification ranges, and continuity.
  • Review and approve welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification records and identify common errors and non-compliances.
  • Apply welding qualification requirements to repairs and alterations of in-service static equipment.
  • Establish effective practices for welding documentation control, records, and welder continuity by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for static equipment engineers, mechanical engineers, integrity and reliability engineers, welding engineers, and inspection engineers responsible for specifying, reviewing, or approving welding procedures and welder qualifications. It is also relevant for QA/QC engineers and inspectors, welding inspectors, maintenance and turnaround engineers, and engineering contractor and fabricator personnel who prepare welding documentation. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical plants; in power generation, desalination, and water utilities; in fabrication shops and EPC contractors; and in inspection and certification service providers. Participants should have a basic understanding of welding processes and static equipment.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Navigate ASME Section IX confidently and locate relevant requirements quickly.
  • Explain how Section IX works together with construction and repair codes.
  • Distinguish clearly between procedure and performance qualification documents.
  • Identify the variables that require requalification for common welding processes.
  • Use material and filler metal groupings correctly.
  • Determine what thicknesses, diameters, and positions a qualification covers.
  • Recognize when toughness requirements affect procedure qualification.
  • Interpret mechanical test results and acceptance criteria.
  • Verify welder qualifications and maintain continuity records.
  • Review WPS and PQR packages and identify common errors.
  • Apply welding qualification requirements to repairs and alterations.
  • Maintain complete and compliant welding documentation.
