Course Overview

The Water Stewardship and Wastewater Reuse Management Training Course is a management-level program that equips professionals to understand, govern, and reduce the water risks facing their organizations, and to plan and oversee the safe reuse of treated wastewater. In water-scarce regions such as the Gulf, water is both an operational dependency and a shared resource, and organizations are expected to account for how they withdraw, consume, discharge, and recycle it. The course focuses on decisions, governance, and accountability rather than plant operation. The program begins with the principles of water stewardship and water-risk assessment. Participants examine physical, regulatory, and reputational water risks, catchment context, and stakeholder roles, drawing on frameworks such as the Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard and the CEO Water Mandate. They learn to build a site water balance, quantify losses, and apply the water footprint concept described in ISO 14046. A central part of the course addresses treated wastewater reuse as a managed resource. Participants explore reuse in irrigation, district cooling, industrial process water, and aquifer recharge, and examine fit-for-purpose quality classes, the multi-barrier approach, sanitation safety planning, and the permitting, monitoring, and contractual arrangements that make reuse schemes reliable, with reference to the WHO Guidelines for the Safe Use of Wastewater, Excreta and Greywater and ISO 16075. The course also covers water efficiency management and disclosure. Participants learn to structure a water efficiency management system along the lines of ISO 46001, set context-based goals and indicators, build a business case for efficiency and reuse investments, and report performance using GRI 303 Water and Effluents. National policy, including Saudi Arabia's National Water Strategy, is discussed within the governance context. Through case studies, water balance exercises, risk workshops, and a site stewardship plan, participants build a methodology they can apply in their own organizations. The course complements technical treatment plant courses without repeating them, and suits industrial facilities, oil and gas companies, municipalities, utilities, giga-project developers, and sustainability teams.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles of corporate water stewardship and the drivers for managing water as a shared resource during the course.
  • Evaluate physical, regulatory, and reputational water risks at site, catchment, and supply-chain level.
  • Develop a site water balance that quantifies withdrawals, consumption, discharges, losses, and recycled flows.
  • Apply the water footprint concept described in ISO 14046 to assess the water impacts of operations, products, and supply chains.
  • Identify fit-for-purpose applications for treated wastewater in irrigation, cooling, industrial processes, construction, and aquifer recharge.
  • Assess the quality classes, treatment levels, and multi-barrier controls required for each treated wastewater reuse application.
  • Apply sanitation safety planning principles to identify hazards, exposure routes, and control measures in reuse schemes.
  • Evaluate permitting, monitoring, reporting, and contractual arrangements between treated wastewater producers, distributors, and end users.
  • Develop a water efficiency management approach aligned with ISO 46001, including baselines, indicators, and improvement opportunities.
  • Build a business case for water efficiency and reuse investments that considers life-cycle cost, supply security, and risk reduction.
  • Prepare water disclosures aligned with the GRI 303 Water and Effluents standard and stakeholder expectations.
  • Develop an integrated water stewardship and reuse action plan with clear governance, responsibilities, and performance indicators.

Who Should Attend

The Water Stewardship and Wastewater Reuse Management Training Course is designed for sustainability managers, environmental managers, HSE managers, water resource planners, utility planners, facility managers, environmental engineers, ESG specialists, and professionals responsible for water strategy, water risk, and water performance in their organizations. The course is also relevant to municipal and utility managers, treated wastewater distribution and reuse program managers, regulators and permitting officers, project development and master-planning teams, procurement and supply-chain professionals, risk managers, internal auditors, and sustainability reporting specialists. Engineers and plant managers who need a management view of reuse quality, permitting, and water efficiency can also benefit from the program. The course is especially valuable for industrial facilities, oil and gas and petrochemical companies, power and desalination operators, municipalities, water and wastewater utilities, giga-project and real-estate developers, and government ministries and agencies. It also supports executives and decision makers responsible for water security, regulatory compliance, investment in efficiency and reuse, and credible sustainability disclosure.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the principles of corporate water stewardship and the drivers for managing water as a shared resource.
  • Assess physical, regulatory, and reputational water risks at site, catchment, and supply-chain level.
  • Construct a site water balance and identify losses, inefficiencies, and recycling opportunities.
  • Apply the water footprint concept to operations, products, and supply chains.
  • Identify suitable applications for treated wastewater and match them to fit-for-purpose quality requirements.
  • Apply the multi-barrier approach and sanitation safety planning to manage health risks in reuse schemes.
  • Evaluate permitting, monitoring, and reporting requirements for treated wastewater reuse.
  • Outline supply agreements and responsibilities between treated wastewater producers, distributors, and users.
  • Establish water efficiency baselines, indicators, and improvement measures aligned with ISO 46001.
  • Build a business case for water efficiency and reuse investments based on cost, risk, and supply security.
  • Prepare credible water disclosures aligned with GRI 303 and stakeholder expectations.
  • Develop an integrated water stewardship and reuse action plan with clear governance and accountability.
