Course Overview

The VSAT Network Design, Installation & Maintenance Training Course equips engineers and technicians with the practical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to design, install, commission, operate, and maintain reliable VSAT networks. Very small aperture terminal networks provide essential connectivity for government offices and public services, bank branches and ATMs, energy, utility, and oil and gas sites, mining operations, emergency response and disaster recovery, schools and health facilities, maritime vessels, and remote communities. Their performance depends on sound network design, correct installation, disciplined configuration, and effective preventive and corrective maintenance. Many VSAT performance problems are caused by avoidable technical and operational issues. Networks may be designed without a clear understanding of traffic requirements and capacity, terminals may be installed with poor pointing, inadequate cross-polarization isolation, or incorrect mounting, and cables and connectors may allow water ingress. Grounding and lightning protection may be insufficient, power supplies unstable, and configurations inconsistent across sites. When faults occur, troubleshooting may be slow and unstructured, spare parts may not be available, and interference caused by incorrectly installed terminals may affect other users on the satellite. This course provides a complete, practical guide to VSAT networks from design to maintenance. Participants learn VSAT fundamentals, network topologies including star, mesh, and hybrid networks, hub and gateway architectures, and the components of remote terminals, including reflectors, feeds, orthomode transducers, block upconverters, low-noise block downconverters, interfacility link cables, modems, and routers. The program covers frequency bands, access schemes such as TDMA, MF-TDMA, SCPC, and widely adopted DVB standards, and network design based on application and traffic requirements, including capacity sizing, committed and burst rates, contention, quality of service, and basic link budget considerations. Participants then learn site survey procedures, including look angle calculation, line of sight and obstruction checks, mounting options, power, grounding, and permits, followed by structured installation, antenna assembly, pointing and peaking, cross-polarization isolation, transmit level setting, and commissioning with the hub and network operations center. The course also addresses IP configuration, routing, VLANs, acceleration, and security, network management and monitoring, preventive maintenance programs, systematic troubleshooting of common faults, spare parts management, documentation, service level management, safety including RF exposure and working at height, mobile VSAT, and the transition to new terminal types for next-generation satellite systems. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with calculations, equipment demonstrations, installation and pointing procedures, configuration exercises, and troubleshooting scenarios. Participants leave with a VSAT requirements and design template, a capacity sizing worksheet, a site survey checklist, an installation and commissioning checklist, a preventive maintenance schedule, a troubleshooting flowchart, and a site documentation template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze VSAT network fundamentals, applications, and the role of VSAT in government, banking, energy, and remote connectivity on Day 1.
  • Evaluate VSAT network topologies, including star, mesh, and hybrid networks, and hub and gateway architectures.
  • Identify the function and specifications of remote terminal components, including reflectors, feeds, orthomode transducers, block upconverters, low-noise block downconverters, interfacility link cables, modems, and routers.
  • Assess frequency bands and access schemes, including TDMA, MF-TDMA, SCPC, and widely adopted DVB standards, for different network requirements.
  • Design VSAT networks based on application and traffic requirements, including capacity sizing, committed and burst rates, contention, and quality of service.
  • Apply basic link budget principles to select antenna sizes, amplifier power, and modulation and coding for VSAT sites.
  • Conduct structured site surveys covering look angles, line of sight, obstructions, mounting, power, grounding, and permits.
  • Implement correct installation procedures, including antenna assembly, pointing and peaking, cross-polarization isolation, transmit level setting, and commissioning with the network operations center.
  • Configure VSAT modems and routers for IP addressing, routing, VLANs, acceleration, quality of service, and security.
  • Develop preventive maintenance programs covering inspections, cable and connector checks, grounding, power, and performance monitoring.
  • Apply systematic troubleshooting methods to diagnose and resolve common VSAT faults, including misalignment, cable faults, equipment failures, rain fade, and interference.
  • Design documentation, spare parts, service level, and safety practices that support reliable VSAT network operations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for VSAT engineers and technicians, satellite and RF engineers, field installation and maintenance engineers, network operations center engineers, and telecommunications and network engineers responsible for VSAT networks. It is also relevant for IT and infrastructure staff responsible for remote site connectivity, technical supervisors of installation contractors, and project engineers managing VSAT deployments. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, public safety, defense, and emergency response organizations operating VSAT networks; in banks and financial institutions using VSAT for branches, ATMs, and backup connectivity; in energy, utilities, oil and gas, mining, and construction organizations connecting remote and temporary sites; and in telecommunications operators, satellite service providers, teleports, and system integrators delivering VSAT services. Maritime and transport organizations operating mobile VSAT terminals, and managers overseeing VSAT service contracts, will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how VSAT networks work and where they are the best connectivity option.
  • Select the appropriate network topology and access scheme for a given application.
  • Identify VSAT terminal components and explain how each affects performance.
  • Size network capacity based on the number of sites, applications, and traffic patterns.
  • Select antenna sizes and equipment using basic link budget principles.
  • Conduct a complete site survey and identify installation risks before deployment.
  • Install and point a VSAT antenna correctly and achieve the required signal quality and cross-polarization isolation.
  • Commission a remote site with the network operations center and verify performance.
  • Configure modems and routers for reliable and secure IP services.
  • Plan and perform preventive maintenance to reduce outages.
  • Troubleshoot common VSAT faults quickly using a structured approach.
  • Maintain complete site documentation and manage spares and service levels effectively.
