Course Overview

The Upstream, Midstream & Downstream Oil and Gas Operations Training Course provides professionals with a clear, integrated understanding of how the oil and gas industry works across its entire value chain, from finding and producing hydrocarbons to transporting, processing, refining, and marketing them. National oil companies, international oil companies, service companies, government entities, regulators, and financial institutions all depend on professionals who understand how technical operations, commercial arrangements, and economics fit together, even when their own role is specialized or non-technical. The course covers each segment of the value chain in practical terms. Participants learn petroleum fundamentals and upstream activities, including exploration, appraisal, drilling and well completion, reservoir management, production operations, artificial lift, surface processing, and enhanced oil recovery, onshore and offshore. The program then addresses midstream operations, including gathering systems, pipelines, storage, terminals, gas processing, LNG liquefaction, shipping, and regasification, followed by downstream operations, including refining processes, product specifications, petrochemicals, and marketing and distribution. Participants also examine the commercial and economic dimensions of the industry, including fiscal regimes and contracts, crude and gas pricing, value chain margins, and the roles of national and international oil companies, as well as health, safety, and process safety, environmental performance, digital technologies, and the energy transition. The course is delivered through clear explanations, process diagrams, videos, case studies, and value chain and economics exercises, with no prior technical background required. Participants leave with an oil and gas value chain map, an industry terminology glossary, process summaries for key upstream, midstream, and downstream facilities, and a simplified value chain economics model.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the structure of the oil and gas value chain and the roles of upstream, midstream, and downstream segments on Day 1.
  • Explain petroleum fundamentals, including the origin, types, and properties of hydrocarbons and the nature of oil and gas reservoirs.
  • Describe exploration and appraisal activities, including geological and geophysical methods, exploration wells, and resource and reserve classification.
  • Explain drilling and well completion operations, well types, and key onshore and offshore drilling considerations.
  • Describe reservoir management and production operations, including natural flow, artificial lift, surface processing, water handling, and enhanced oil recovery.
  • Explain midstream operations, including gathering systems, pipelines, storage, terminals, gas processing, LNG liquefaction, shipping, and regasification.
  • Describe refining processes, including distillation, conversion, treating, and blending, and the main petroleum products and specifications.
  • Explain the links between refining, petrochemicals, and marketing and distribution of fuels and products.
  • Analyze oil and gas commercial arrangements, including concessions, production sharing agreements, service contracts, and joint ventures.
  • Analyze crude oil and natural gas pricing, benchmarks, and value chain margins, and the key drivers of industry economics.
  • Evaluate health, safety, process safety, environmental, and regulatory considerations across the value chain.
  • Assess the impact of digital technologies and the energy transition, including emissions reduction, carbon capture, and hydrogen, on oil and gas operations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for professionals who need a broad, practical understanding of the oil and gas industry, including new engineers and technical staff, non-technical professionals in finance, legal, human resources, procurement, supply chain, communications, and administration, and professionals moving into the industry from other sectors. It is also relevant for managers who need a wider view beyond their own specialization. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil companies, gas and LNG companies, refining and petrochemical companies, oilfield service and engineering companies, and shipping and trading companies; in ministries of energy and petroleum, regulators, and government entities overseeing the sector; and in banks, investment institutions, insurers, legal firms, and consultancies serving the oil and gas industry.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how the oil and gas value chain works from reservoir to customer.
  • Use key oil and gas terminology confidently.
  • Describe how oil and gas are found, appraised, and developed.
  • Explain the basics of drilling, well completion, and production.
  • Describe how oil and gas are processed, stored, and transported.
  • Explain how LNG is produced, shipped, and regasified.
  • Describe the main refining processes and petroleum products.
  • Explain how refining connects to petrochemicals and fuel marketing.
  • Describe the main types of oil and gas contracts and fiscal regimes.
  • Explain how oil and gas prices are set and how value is created along the chain.
  • Recognize the major safety, environmental, and regulatory issues in the industry.
  • Discuss how technology and the energy transition are changing the industry.
