Course Overview

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM) Training Course equips air navigation service provider professionals, civil aviation authority staff, airspace planners, and drone and advanced air mobility stakeholders with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to plan, regulate, and operate systems that safely integrate unmanned aircraft into the airspace. The rapid growth of drones and the emergence of advanced air mobility are introducing large numbers of new airspace users operating at low altitudes and, increasingly, beyond visual line of sight. Traditional air traffic management was not designed for this scale and diversity of operations, so a dedicated, largely digital and automated traffic management capability is needed to maintain safety, security, and efficiency while enabling the drone economy and future air mobility. The course covers unmanned aircraft systems traffic management from concept to implementation. Participants learn the types and applications of unmanned aircraft and advanced air mobility, the regulatory framework and operational categories for drones, and the concept, objectives, and architecture of unmanned aircraft systems traffic management and its relationship with traditional air traffic management. The program then addresses the core services of this traffic management capability, including registration and identification, remote identification, flight planning and authorization, airspace authorization and geo-awareness and geo-fencing, strategic deconfliction, conformance monitoring, and dynamic airspace management, as well as communication, navigation, surveillance, and detect-and-avoid considerations for unmanned operations. Participants also examine low-altitude airspace design and structures, the roles of service providers and supplementary data service providers, security and counter-drone considerations, privacy and data protection, safety and risk assessment for unmanned operations, the integration of beyond visual line of sight and advanced air mobility operations including vertiports and corridors, and implementation, stakeholder coordination, and future evolution. The course is delivered through case studies, airspace and service design workshops, operational scenario exercises, and implementation planning. Participants leave with an unmanned aircraft systems traffic management concept and services reference, a low-altitude airspace and operations assessment checklist, an operational risk assessment outline for unmanned operations, a stakeholder and roles map, and a unmanned aircraft systems traffic management implementation plan template. This course provides planning and management-level knowledge and does not constitute a drone pilot or operator certification program.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for air navigation service provider professionals, civil aviation authority and regulatory staff, airspace planners, and professionals responsible for drone and unmanned aircraft integration. It is also relevant for air traffic management professionals, drone program and operations managers, advanced air mobility and vertiport planners, security and public safety professionals, and technology providers developing unmanned traffic management services. It is particularly valuable for professionals in air navigation service providers, civil aviation authorities and regulators, ministries of transport, interior, and aviation, airport operators, smart city and infrastructure organizations, drone and advanced air mobility operators, and technology providers and consultancies. This course addresses the planning, regulation, and management of unmanned traffic management and does not provide drone piloting or operator qualifications. A basic understanding of airspace or aviation is recommended.
