Course Overview

The UAV (Drone) Operations & Industrial Applications Training Course equips engineers, inspectors, HSE professionals, surveyors, and operations personnel with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan and conduct safe, compliant drone operations and to apply drone technology effectively in industrial inspection, surveying, monitoring, and emergency response. Drones are transforming how organizations in oil and gas, power and utilities, water, construction, infrastructure, mining, and government inspect assets and collect data, reducing the need for work at height, confined space entry, and scaffolding, shortening shutdowns, and improving safety and data quality. Realizing these benefits requires a solid understanding of aviation regulations, flight safety, sensor selection, data processing, and operational management. The course covers drone operations from fundamentals to program implementation. Participants learn drone types and components, including airframes, propulsion, batteries, flight controllers, navigation, command and control links, and payloads such as visual, thermal, LiDAR, multispectral, and gas detection sensors. The program then addresses civil aviation regulations and national authority requirements, airspace, operational categories, and visual and beyond visual line of sight operations, mission planning, operational risk assessment, pre-flight checks, crew roles, emergency procedures, and safe operation in industrial environments near hazardous areas, power lines, flares, heat, dust, and wind, including confined space inspection drones. Participants also examine industrial applications, including inspection of flare stacks, towers, tanks, pipelines, power lines, and renewable energy assets, thermography and gas leak detection, surveying and mapping with photogrammetry and LiDAR, volumetric measurement, construction monitoring, security, and emergency response, as well as data processing and analytics, data management and cybersecurity, and establishing and managing an organizational drone program. The course is delivered through interactive sessions, mission planning workshops, flight simulator exercises, data processing demonstrations, and industrial case studies, with supervised practical flights where regulations and facilities permit. Participants leave with a mission planning and risk assessment template, a pre-flight and post-flight checklist, an emergency procedures guide, an application and sensor selection guide, and a drone program implementation checklist. This course is not a remote pilot licensing program; licensing and operator authorization requirements are set by the relevant national civil aviation authority.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role and benefits of drones in industrial operations, inspection, and asset management on Day 1.
  • Identify drone types, including multirotor, fixed-wing, and hybrid vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and their applications and limitations.
  • Explain drone components, including airframes, propulsion, batteries, flight controllers, navigation systems, and command and control links.
  • Select payloads and sensors, including visual, zoom, thermal, LiDAR, multispectral, and gas detection sensors, for different applications.
  • Apply civil aviation regulations and national authority requirements, including registration, remote pilot and operator requirements, airspace restrictions, and operational categories.
  • Plan drone missions, including airspace checks, weather assessment, flight patterns, and data capture requirements.
  • Conduct operational risk assessments and apply pre-flight checks, crew roles, and safe flight procedures.
  • Apply emergency procedures for lost link, fly-away, navigation loss, battery failure, and collision risks, and manage battery safety.
  • Operate drones safely in industrial environments, including hazardous areas, near power lines and flares, in heat, dust, and wind, and inside confined spaces.
  • Apply drones to asset inspection, thermography, gas leak detection, surveying and mapping, volumetric measurement, construction monitoring, security, and emergency response.
  • Process, analyze, and manage drone data, including photogrammetry, LiDAR processing, AI-based defect detection, data security, and privacy considerations.
  • Establish and manage an organizational drone program, including business case, procedures, fleet maintenance, records, insurance, and integration with inspection and maintenance programs, by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for inspection engineers and inspectors, asset integrity and maintenance engineers, surveyors and GIS specialists, HSE professionals, and operations and project engineers who plan, conduct, or use drone operations. It is also relevant for drone program managers and coordinators, security and emergency response personnel, construction and site managers, environmental monitoring specialists, and managers evaluating the introduction of drone technology. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, and petrochemical facilities; in power generation, transmission, renewable energy, water, and utility organizations; in construction, infrastructure, and mining companies; in ports, airports, and logistics operators; and in ministries, municipalities, and government entities responsible for infrastructure, security, and emergency response.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how drones create value in industrial operations and inspection.
  • Select the right type of drone for different tasks.
  • Understand how drone systems and their components work.
  • Choose suitable sensors for inspection, mapping, and monitoring.
  • Understand and comply with the applicable aviation regulations.
  • Plan drone missions that capture the required data safely.
  • Assess and control the risks of drone operations.
  • Respond correctly to in-flight emergencies and manage batteries safely.
  • Operate drones safely in challenging industrial environments.
  • Apply drones to a wide range of inspection, mapping, and monitoring tasks.
  • Process and manage drone data to produce useful information.
  • Plan and manage a safe, effective organizational drone program.
