Transmission networks are the backbone of modern telecommunications, carrying voice, data, and video traffic between access networks, core networks, data centres, and service platforms. Reliable transmission engineering is essential for maintaining service availability, meeting capacity demands, and supporting technologies such as 5G, fibre broadband, and cloud-based services. This course develops practical skills in transmission network planning, design, capacity assessment, and performance optimisation. Participants examine fibre-optic transmission, microwave radio links, optical transport technologies, network topologies, and redundancy mechanisms, with a focus on selecting appropriate solutions for different traffic requirements and operating conditions. The programme also covers link performance, bandwidth planning, latency, signal degradation, fault localisation, and service continuity. Through technical exercises, participants learn to evaluate transmission requirements, identify network bottlenecks, troubleshoot common faults, and develop engineering solutions that improve reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
