Course Overview

Effective capacity planning and traffic engineering are essential for maintaining telecom network performance, controlling infrastructure costs, and supporting growing demand for voice, data, and digital services. This course provides practical methods for analysing traffic patterns, forecasting capacity requirements, and identifying congestion risks across mobile, fixed, IP, and transmission networks. Participants learn to evaluate network utilisation, apply traffic modelling techniques, estimate future demand, and determine when additional capacity or traffic optimisation is required. The course also covers Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth allocation, traffic prioritisation, and performance monitoring to help engineers make evidence-based network planning decisions.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse traffic patterns and network utilisation.
  • Forecast capacity requirements using historical data and growth trends.
  • Apply traffic engineering and capacity modelling techniques.
  • Identify congestion points and performance bottlenecks.
  • Evaluate bandwidth allocation and QoS mechanisms.
  • Assess capacity requirements for 4G, 5G, IP, and transmission networks.
  • Develop network expansion and optimisation plans.
  • Establish capacity KPIs and monitoring procedures.

Who Should Attend

Telecom capacity planning and traffic engineers. Mobile and fixed network planning specialists. IP and transmission network engineers. Network performance and optimisation teams. Network operations and infrastructure managers. Telecom data analysts and technical consultants.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret traffic statistics and utilisation reports.
  • Forecast network demand and identify capacity gaps.
  • Apply basic traffic modelling and dimensioning methods.
  • Evaluate congestion, latency, packet loss, and utilisation.
  • Recommend traffic optimisation and capacity expansion measures.
  • Assess QoS requirements and service performance.
  • Prepare capacity plans supported by measurable KPIs.

Course Outline

Day 1

Traffic Engineering Fundamentals

  • Principles of traffic engineering and capacity planning.
  • Traffic characteristics across voice, data, video, and enterprise services.
  • Busy-hour traffic, peak demand, seasonality, and usage patterns.
  • Key metrics: throughput, utilisation, latency, jitter, and packet loss.
  • Traffic measurement sources, network counters, and performance reports.
  • Relationship between service demand, network resources, and user experience.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyse sample traffic reports to identify peak periods, utilisation trends, and potential congestion risks.
Day 2

Capacity Forecasting and Network Dimensioning

  • Historical traffic analysis and demand forecasting.
  • Forecasting subscriber growth, data consumption, and service adoption.
  • Capacity calculations for access, aggregation, core, and transmission networks.
  • Introduction to traffic models, including Erlang concepts for voice traffic.
  • Capacity headroom, redundancy requirements, and engineering margins.
  • Scenario analysis for business growth and unexpected demand increases.
  • Practical Exercise: Calculate future capacity requirements using sample traffic data and develop a forecast with defined growth and reserve margins.
Day 3

Traffic Optimisation and Quality of Service

  • Traffic distribution, routing efficiency, and load balancing.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) classification, prioritisation, and scheduling.
  • Bandwidth allocation and traffic shaping.
  • Congestion management and bottleneck identification.
  • Performance considerations for 4G, 5G, IP, and broadband networks.
  • Evaluating the impact of optimisation on service quality and resource utilisation.
  • Practical Exercise: Review a simulated congested network and recommend traffic management measures to improve performance and service quality.
Day 4

Capacity Planning for Modern Telecom Networks

  • Capacity requirements for 4G and 5G traffic growth.
  • Radio access capacity considerations and cell-level traffic distribution.
  • IP backbone, aggregation, and transmission capacity planning.
  • Fibre and microwave link utilisation and upgrade requirements.
  • Data centre connectivity and cloud traffic considerations.
  • Resilience, failover capacity, and network expansion planning.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a capacity improvement proposal for a network experiencing traffic growth, including upgrade priorities, redundancy, and expected performance benefits.
Day 5

Performance Monitoring and Capacity Strategy

  • Capacity KPIs, utilisation thresholds, and performance dashboards.
  • Identifying recurring congestion and underutilised resources.
  • Comparing forecast demand with actual traffic growth.
  • Investment prioritisation based on cost, risk, and service impact.
  • Developing capacity plans, implementation timelines, and resource estimates.
  • Establishing continuous monitoring and periodic forecast reviews.
  • Practical Exercise: Prepare a capacity planning report using sample network data, including demand forecasts, identified capacity gaps, recommended upgrades, and measurable performance targets.
