Course Overview

The Technical Report Writing & Presentation Skills for Engineers Training Course equips engineers, technical specialists, and technical managers with the skills to write clear, accurate, and well-structured technical documents and to deliver confident, persuasive technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences. In energy, oil and gas, utilities, construction, manufacturing, transport, telecommunications, and government technical departments, engineers must regularly communicate inspection findings, failure investigations, design decisions, test results, progress, and recommendations. The quality of this communication directly affects decisions, safety, compliance, and the credibility of the engineering function. The course covers the full technical communication process. Participants learn how to analyze audiences and purposes, structure common engineering documents such as inspection, investigation, design, feasibility, progress, test, and commissioning reports, and write executive summaries, findings, conclusions, and recommendations that decision makers can act on. The program addresses clear and concise technical writing, presentation of data through tables, charts, and diagrams, referencing standards and sources, editing and quality review, document control, technical correspondence, and the responsible use of AI writing tools. Participants then develop presentation skills, including structuring technical briefings, designing effective slides, explaining complex information simply, delivering with confidence, and handling questions from management and stakeholders. The course is delivered through intensive writing workshops, report rewriting exercises, peer reviews, and recorded presentation practice with feedback. Participants leave with report templates for common engineering documents, a technical writing style guide, a data presentation guide, a report review checklist, and a technical presentation planning template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the principles of effective technical communication and the impact of poor communication on engineering decisions, safety, and credibility on Day 1.
  • Analyze audiences, purposes, and information needs for different technical documents and presentations.
  • Structure common engineering documents, including inspection, investigation, design, feasibility, progress, test, and commissioning reports.
  • Write clear executive summaries, findings, conclusions, and recommendations that support decision making.
  • Apply clear, concise, and precise technical writing, including correct terminology, units, and plain language.
  • Present technical data effectively using tables, charts, diagrams, and visual aids.
  • Reference standards, specifications, data sources, and supporting evidence correctly.
  • Apply editing, proofreading, peer review, and document control practices to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Write effective technical correspondence, emails, and briefing notes.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for engineers of all disciplines, technical specialists, project engineers, maintenance and reliability engineers, inspection and quality engineers, HSE engineers, and technical managers who prepare reports and present technical information. It is also relevant for technologists, scientists, laboratory professionals, and consultants who communicate technical findings and recommendations. It is particularly valuable for professionals in energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, power, water, and utility organizations; in construction, engineering, and consulting firms; in manufacturing and industrial companies; in transport, aviation, and telecommunications organizations; and in ministries, government entities, municipalities, and regulators with technical departments. Early-career engineers and engineers moving into supervisory or management roles will particularly benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why clear technical communication matters for engineering outcomes.
  • Tailor technical documents and presentations to different audiences.
  • Use appropriate structures for common engineering reports.
  • Write executive summaries and recommendations that lead to action.
  • Write technical content that is clear, concise, and precise.
