Course Overview

Systems analysis and design provide the foundation for developing effective information systems that align with organisational objectives, operational requirements, and user expectations. Poorly defined requirements, inadequate process analysis, and weak system design can lead to project delays, unnecessary costs, integration problems, and solutions that fail to address business needs. This course develops practical skills in analysing business processes, gathering and validating requirements, modelling system behaviour, and designing reliable information systems. Participants will explore functional and non-functional requirements, process modelling, data modelling, system architecture, database design concepts, interface design, and the use of Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams to communicate system specifications. Through case studies and applied design exercises, participants will learn to translate business problems into structured system requirements, evaluate alternative solutions, develop system models, and prepare technical documentation that supports development, testing, implementation, and maintenance. The course also examines stakeholder engagement, requirements traceability, system integration, and iterative development approaches to improve solution quality and reduce implementation risks.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply systematic methods to analyse business processes and information system requirements.
  • Identify stakeholder needs and translate them into clear, testable requirements.
  • Distinguish functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Model business processes, system interactions, and information flows.
  • Apply UML techniques to represent system structure and behaviour.
  • Develop conceptual data models and understand database design principles.
  • Evaluate system architecture and alternative design solutions.
  • Assess usability, security, scalability, and integration requirements.
  • Prepare system specifications and design documentation.
  • Validate requirements and support system testing and implementation planning.

  • Practical Exercise: Analyse a business scenario, identify stakeholder needs, and prepare an initial requirements specification.
Day 2

Process Modelling and System Requirements Analysis

  • Business process modelling and workflow analysis.
  • Context diagrams, data flow diagrams (DFDs), and process decomposition.
  • Use case modelling and actor-system interactions.
  • UML use case, activity, and sequence diagrams.
  • Identifying business rules, exceptions, dependencies, and system constraints.
  • Requirements documentation, traceability, and change control.
  • Practical Exercise: Model an existing business process and develop use cases and process diagrams for a proposed information system.
Day 3

System Design, Data Modelling, and Architecture

  • Translating requirements into logical and physical system designs.
  • System architecture concepts, components, interfaces, and integration patterns.
  • Conceptual and logical data modelling, entities, attributes, and relationships.
  • Database design principles and introduction to normalisation.
  • User interface design, usability, accessibility, and user experience considerations.
  • Security, performance, scalability, and reliability requirements.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a high-level system architecture, a conceptual data model, and preliminary interface specifications.
Day 4

Design Validation, Integration, and Quality Assurance

  • Evaluating design alternatives against business and technical requirements.
  • Reviewing system models for completeness, consistency, and feasibility.
  • System integration, APIs, external interfaces, and data exchange considerations.
  • Identifying security risks, single points of failure, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Requirements traceability and the relationship between design and test cases.
  • Design reviews, stakeholder approval, and technical documentation standards.
  • Practical Exercise: Review a proposed system design, identify gaps and risks, and prepare a set of design improvement recommendations.
Day 5

Implementation Planning, Testing, and Case Study

  • Preparing system specifications and design handover documentation.
  • Translating requirements into functional test scenarios and acceptance tests.
