Course Overview

The System Wide Information Management (SWIM) Training Course equips air navigation service provider professionals, aviation information and IT specialists, civil aviation authority staff, and aviation modernization teams with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to understand, plan, and implement system-wide information management as the information backbone of modern, interoperable air traffic management. Traditionally, aviation information was exchanged through point-to-point connections and incompatible systems, creating silos, duplication, and barriers to collaboration. System-wide information management replaces this with a standards-based, service-oriented environment in which aeronautical, meteorological, flight, and surveillance information is shared as governed, interoperable services among air navigation service providers, airports, airlines, and other stakeholders, enabling collaborative decision making and the wider air navigation modernization agenda. The course covers system-wide information management from concept to implementation. Participants learn the drivers for information sharing in aviation, the limitations of legacy exchange, and the system-wide information management concept, principles, and benefits, along with its place in the global air navigation modernization framework. The program then addresses the information domains shared through system-wide information management, including aeronautical, meteorological, flight and flow, and surveillance information, the service-oriented architecture underpinning it, and core concepts such as information services, service-oriented and interface definitions, information exchange models, registries, and the service and information governance that make the environment trustworthy. Participants also examine the technical infrastructure, including networks, messaging, and security, information and data governance, quality, and semantics, identity, access control, and information security for shared services, service lifecycle management, stakeholder roles and collaboration, implementation and migration from legacy systems, and the relationship of system-wide information management to collaborative decision making, aeronautical information management, and future concepts. The course is delivered through architecture and concept walkthroughs, service and information modeling exercises, governance workshops, and implementation and migration planning. Participants leave with a system-wide information management concept and architecture reference, an information service definition template, a service and information governance checklist, a security and access control reference, and a system-wide information management implementation and migration planning template. This course provides concept, architecture, and management-level knowledge rather than vendor-specific system engineering.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the drivers for information sharing in aviation and the limitations of legacy exchange on Day 1.
  • Explain the system-wide information management concept, principles, benefits, and its place in air navigation modernization.
  • Describe the information domains shared through system-wide information management: aeronautical, meteorological, flight and flow, and surveillance.
  • Explain the service-oriented architecture underpinning system-wide information management.
  • Describe core concepts, including information services, service and interface definitions, and information exchange models.
  • Explain registries and the role of service and information governance.
  • Describe the technical infrastructure, including networks, messaging, and security.
  • Apply information and data governance, quality, and semantics to shared services.
  • Apply identity, access control, and information security for shared information services.
  • Apply service lifecycle management and define stakeholder roles and collaboration.
  • Plan implementation and migration from legacy systems to system-wide information management.
  • Explain the relationship of system-wide information management to collaborative decision making, aeronautical information management, and future concepts by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for air navigation service provider professionals, aviation information management and IT specialists, enterprise and systems architects in aviation, and civil aviation authority technical staff. It is also relevant for aeronautical information, meteorological, and flight data specialists, information governance and security professionals, project and program managers for modernization, and professionals from airports and airlines involved in aviation information sharing. It is particularly valuable for professionals in air navigation service providers, civil aviation authorities and regulators, airport operators and airlines participating in information sharing, meteorological service providers, and aviation technology providers and consultancies. A basic understanding of air navigation or aviation information systems is recommended.
