Course Overview

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Implementation Training Course equips government officials, strategy and planning professionals, sustainability managers, and corporate and civil society leaders with the knowledge and practical tools needed to translate the Sustainable Development Goals into policies, strategies, programs, budgets, and measurable results. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 goals provide a shared global framework for ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity, and governments, cities, companies, and institutions increasingly align their national visions, strategies, and reporting with it. Many organizations, however, struggle to move from commitment to implementation because of weak integration into planning and budgeting, limited data, fragmented institutional arrangements, and insufficient financing and partnerships. The course covers SDG implementation from principles to results. Participants learn the structure and principles of the 2030 Agenda, including universality, integration, and leaving no one behind, the goals, targets, and indicator framework, and the interlinkages and trade-offs between goals. The program then addresses institutional and governance arrangements for implementation, policy coherence, aligning SDGs with national visions and development plans, localization at city and regional levels, mainstreaming the SDGs into organizational strategies, programs, and budgets, and prioritization using national context and impact. Participants also examine SDG data and indicators, monitoring and evaluation, voluntary national and local reviews, stakeholder engagement and partnerships, financing the SDGs, including integrated financing frameworks, public budgets, blended finance, and sustainable bonds, and corporate SDG integration, impact measurement, and sustainability reporting. The course is delivered through case studies of national, local, and corporate SDG implementation, alignment and prioritization workshops, indicator and monitoring exercises, and financing and partnership planning. Participants leave with an SDG alignment and prioritization matrix, an SDG mainstreaming checklist for strategies and budgets, an SDG indicator and monitoring framework template, a stakeholder and partnership mapping tool, and an SDG implementation roadmap template.
