Course Overview

The Supplier Corrective Action Request (SCAR) Management Training Course develops the skills required to manage supplier-related nonconformities systematically, identify root causes, and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions. It focuses on establishing a structured approach to resolving recurring quality issues, preventing defects from reaching production or customers, and strengthening supplier accountability. The course covers the complete SCAR lifecycle, from identifying and documenting supplier nonconformities to issuing corrective action requests, evaluating supplier responses, conducting root-cause analysis, approving action plans, and verifying implementation and effectiveness. Participants explore practical problem-solving methods, including the 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, and structured corrective action frameworks, while learning to distinguish immediate containment from permanent corrective measures. Through practical exercises and realistic supplier quality scenarios, participants develop the ability to assess SCAR submissions, challenge incomplete root-cause analyses, establish clear response deadlines, and escalate unresolved or recurring issues. The programme supports stronger supplier relationships, reduced defect recurrence, improved incoming quality, and measurable improvements in supplier performance.

SCAR Fundamentals and Nonconformity Management

  • Purpose and scope of SCAR within supplier quality management systems.
  • Relationship between SCAR, nonconformity reports, supplier audits, and corrective action processes.
  • Identifying supplier-related defects through incoming inspection, production feedback, customer complaints, and audits.
  • Classifying nonconformities according to severity, risk, recurrence, and operational impact.
  • Defining SCAR initiation criteria, ownership, approval authority, and escalation levels.
  • Documenting nonconformities through specifications, inspection records, photographs, and supporting evidence.
  • Practical Exercise: Evaluate supplier defect scenarios and determine SCAR classification, priority, and issuance requirements.
Day 2

SCAR Issuance, Containment, and Supplier Communication

  • Preparing complete and technically accurate SCAR forms.
  • Defining the problem statement, affected products, lot numbers, quantities, and traceability information.
  • Establishing immediate containment actions, including stock segregation, shipment holds, and additional inspection.
  • Setting response deadlines and defining required supplier deliverables.
  • Communicating expectations to suppliers and coordinating internal stakeholders.
  • Managing overdue responses, incomplete submissions, and supplier disputes.
  • Practical Exercise: Prepare a SCAR package for a supplier quality incident, including containment requirements, evidence, responsibilities, and response deadlines.
Day 3

Root-Cause Analysis and Corrective Action Planning

  • Distinguishing symptoms, direct causes, contributing factors, and root causes.
  • Applying the 5 Whys technique and Fishbone Diagram.
  • Using process mapping, defect data, and evidence-based investigation methods.
  • Evaluating human, process, equipment, material, and management system factors.
  • Differentiating correction, corrective action, and preventive measures.
  • Developing action plans with responsibilities, milestones, deadlines, and measurable results.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyze a recurring supplier defect using the 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagram, then develop a structured corrective action plan.
Day 4

SCAR Review, Verification, and Effectiveness Assessment

  • Reviewing supplier investigation reports and root-cause evidence.
  • Assessing the completeness, technical validity, and feasibility of proposed actions.
  • Identifying weak root-cause statements and actions that address symptoms rather than underlying causes.
  • Verifying implementation through records, photographs, process changes, inspections, and audit evidence.
  • Establishing effectiveness criteria, monitoring periods, and recurrence thresholds.
  • Reopening SCARs and escalating cases when actions fail or defects recur.
  • Practical Exercise: Evaluate a supplier's SCAR submission, identify gaps in the investigation and action plan, and define verification and effectiveness criteria.
Day 5

SCAR Performance Monitoring and Supplier Improvement

  • Developing SCAR performance KPIs, including closure time, overdue actions, recurrence rates, and effectiveness rates.
  • Analyzing trends by supplier, defect type, product, process, and risk category.
  • Integrating SCAR results into supplier scorecards, audits, and performance reviews.
  • Establishing escalation procedures for repeated or critical supplier nonconformities.
  • Preparing management reports and communicating unresolved quality risks.
