The Substation Maintenance: Operation, Testing & Troubleshooting Training Course provides a comprehensive understanding of electrical substation operation, preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment testing, and systematic fault diagnosis. The programme focuses on maintaining the reliability, safety, and availability of substations serving power generation facilities, transmission networks, distribution systems, industrial plants, and critical infrastructure. Electrical substations contain essential equipment that enables the transformation, switching, protection, control, and distribution of electrical power. Their reliable operation depends on the condition of transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, busbars, protection relays, grounding systems, and auxiliary power supplies. This course examines the operating principles of these components and the maintenance practices required to preserve equipment integrity and prevent unexpected failures. The programme explores structured maintenance strategies, including preventive, predictive, condition-based, and corrective maintenance. Participants examine inspection procedures, electrical testing methods, equipment condition assessment, thermographic inspection, insulation diagnostics, contact resistance measurement, circuit breaker timing tests, transformer testing, and protection system verification. Emphasis is placed on interpreting test results, recognizing abnormal operating conditions, and identifying developing faults before they lead to equipment damage or service interruptions. A significant component of the course addresses safe substation operation and maintenance. Topics include electrical isolation, lockout/tagout, permit-to-work systems, earthing and grounding practices, arc-flash awareness, switching procedures, and coordination between operations and maintenance teams. The programme also examines troubleshooting techniques for common substation problems, including insulation deterioration, overheating, breaker malfunctions, protection relay misoperations, control circuit failures, and communication-related issues. Through practical exercises, diagnostic scenarios, and maintenance case studies, participants develop a structured approach to identifying faults, evaluating equipment condition, selecting appropriate tests, and implementing corrective actions. The course also addresses maintenance documentation, equipment history, failure analysis, and performance indicators that support continuous improvement. It is designed to help electrical professionals strengthen technical competence, improve maintenance effectiveness, reduce unplanned outages, and enhance the long-term reliability of electrical substations.
