Course Overview

The Strategic Supply Chain Management Training Course equips senior managers and supply chain leaders with the strategic frameworks and decision-making tools needed to design and lead supply chains that create competitive or institutional advantage. In government entities, ministries, healthcare systems, banks, manufacturing, retail, and distribution companies, and large corporations, the supply chain is no longer only an operational function. It determines the organization's ability to deliver its strategy, control cost, protect service continuity, respond to disruption, meet sustainability expectations, and support national and corporate priorities such as localization and economic diversification. Many organizations still manage their supply chains through incremental operational fixes rather than deliberate strategic choices. Supply chain strategy may not be explicitly linked to organizational strategy, one supply chain model may be applied to very different products, services, and customer needs, make-or-buy and outsourcing decisions may be made case by case, and networks may reflect past conditions rather than future requirements. Planning may remain functional rather than integrated, investment in digital capabilities may lack a clear roadmap, and resilience and sustainability may be addressed only after problems arise. These gaps limit the supply chain's ability to contribute to long-term performance. This course focuses on the strategic dimension of supply chain management. Participants learn how to formulate a supply chain strategy aligned with organizational strategy and value proposition, apply value chain and competitive advantage concepts, and segment supply chains to match different demand and service profiles. The program covers strategic make-or-buy and outsourcing decisions, strategic sourcing and supplier partnerships, supply chain network strategy including global, regional, and localized sourcing and production options, and demand-driven and integrated business planning. It also addresses digital supply chain strategy, resilience strategy using risk assessment, scenario planning, and stress testing, sustainable supply chain strategy, supply chain finance and working capital strategy, supply chain operating models and governance, building supply chain talent and capabilities, maturity assessment, executive performance measurement, and developing a strategic supply chain roadmap and business case. The course is delivered through an interactive, executive-oriented approach with strategic case studies, scenario workshops, and group decision exercises. Participants leave with a supply chain strategy statement, a supply chain segmentation framework, a make-or-buy evaluation, a supply chain maturity assessment, a resilience scenario analysis, an executive supply chain scorecard, and a strategic supply chain roadmap for their organization.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the strategic role of the supply chain in creating competitive or institutional advantage and delivering organizational strategy on Day 1.
  • Assess the maturity of the participant's supply chain and its alignment with organizational strategy, service requirements, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Develop a supply chain strategy that translates organizational priorities into clear supply chain objectives, capabilities, and choices.
  • Apply supply chain segmentation to design differentiated supply chain models for products, services, or customer groups with different demand and service profiles.
  • Evaluate strategic make-or-buy and outsourcing decisions using criteria such as core competence, total cost, risk, control, and capability.
  • Develop strategic sourcing and supplier partnership approaches that build long-term value, innovation, and supply security.
  • Evaluate supply chain network strategy options, including global, regional, and localized sourcing and production, in terms of cost, service, risk, and strategic priorities.
  • Assess the role of integrated business planning in aligning strategic, financial, and operational plans across the organization.
  • Develop a digital supply chain strategy that prioritizes technology investments based on business value and capability gaps.
  • Design supply chain resilience strategies using risk assessment, scenario planning, and stress testing of critical supply chains.
  • Align supply chain strategy with sustainability goals, working capital objectives, and appropriate operating models and governance structures.
  • Design a strategic supply chain roadmap and executive scorecard for the participant's organization by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for supply chain directors, heads of procurement and logistics, operations directors, supply chain and procurement managers preparing for senior roles, and strategy and transformation professionals responsible for shaping supply chain direction. It is also highly relevant for senior executives, general managers, and department heads whose objectives depend on reliable, efficient, and resilient supply chains. It is particularly valuable for leaders in ministries and government entities responsible for public procurement strategy, central supply, strategic stocks, localization programs, and continuity of public services; in healthcare systems shaping the strategy for supply of medicines, consumables, and equipment; in banks and financial institutions overseeing procurement, outsourcing, and third-party supply strategies; and in manufacturing, retail, consumer goods, utilities, construction, and service organizations competing on cost, service, and reliability. Finance directors, risk and sustainability leaders, and board or executive committee members involved in major supply chain investments and decisions will also benefit from the course.
