Course Overview

The Storage Tank Design & Construction (API 650) Training Course equips mechanical, civil, and project engineers, inspectors, and QA/QC professionals with a practical understanding of how welded atmospheric storage tanks are designed, fabricated, erected, inspected, and tested in accordance with API Standard 650. Storage tanks are essential assets in refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas terminals, power and water utilities, and industrial facilities. Errors in design, material selection, foundation preparation, welding, or testing can lead to leaks, shell and bottom failures, floating roof problems, fires, and serious environmental and financial consequences over the tank's long service life. The course covers the full design and construction process. Participants learn the scope of API 650 and its relationship with other standards for low-pressure tanks, venting, fire protection, and in-service inspection, as well as design data sheets, materials selection, and design conditions. The program then addresses shell design using recognized calculation methods, bottom and annular plate design, fixed roof and floating roof design, including internal and external floating roofs and frangible joints, wind and seismic design, anchorage, nozzles and appurtenances, and venting. Participants also examine foundation design and settlement, cathodic protection and leak detection, fabrication and welding requirements, erection methods and tolerances, inspection and nondestructive testing, vacuum box and hydrostatic testing, documentation and nameplating, and common design and construction errors. The course is delivered through design calculation examples, drawing and data sheet reviews, construction case studies, and inspection and testing exercises. Participants leave with a tank data sheet review checklist, shell and bottom design calculation worksheets, a roof and appurtenance selection guide, a construction inspection and test plan template, and a hydrostatic test and settlement monitoring checklist. This course builds practical application skills and is not an official API certification program; participants should use the current edition of the standard applicable to their projects.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the scope, structure, and application of API 650 and its relationship with standards for low-pressure tanks, venting, fire protection, and in-service inspection on Day 1.
  • Interpret tank data sheets and define design conditions, including design liquid level, specific gravity, design temperature, pressure, corrosion allowance, and environmental loads.
  • Select tank materials based on design metal temperature, toughness, service, and corrosion considerations.
  • Calculate shell thickness using recognized API 650 design methods and verify hydrostatic test conditions.
  • Design bottom and annular plates and evaluate bottom configurations and slopes.
  • Evaluate fixed roof types, including supported and self-supporting cone and dome roofs, and frangible roof-to-shell joints.
  • Evaluate external and internal floating roof designs, seals, drains, supports, and venting.
  • Apply wind and seismic design requirements, including wind girders, overturning, sliding, and anchorage.
  • Specify nozzles, manholes, reinforcement, and appurtenances and apply normal and emergency venting requirements.
  • Evaluate foundation design, settlement limits, cathodic protection, and leak detection arrangements.
  • Apply fabrication, welding, erection, and tolerance requirements for tank construction.
  • Plan inspection, nondestructive testing, vacuum box testing, hydrostatic testing, settlement monitoring, and documentation to confirm tank integrity by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for mechanical and static equipment engineers, tank design engineers, civil and structural engineers involved in tank foundations, and project engineers responsible for storage tank projects. It is also relevant for inspection engineers, QA/QC engineers and inspectors, construction supervisors, welding engineers, and maintenance and integrity engineers who need to understand tank design and construction requirements. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas production facilities, bulk storage and export terminals, power and desalination plants, water utilities, and industrial facilities, as well as engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, tank fabricators, and third-party inspection agencies.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Navigate API 650 and identify the requirements that apply to their tanks.
  • Review tank data sheets and define correct design conditions.
  • Select suitable materials for tank service and design temperature.
  • Calculate required shell thickness and verify design results.
  • Design bottom and annular plates appropriately.
  • Select suitable fixed or floating roof types for different products.
  • Apply wind, seismic, and anchorage requirements.
  • Specify nozzles, appurtenances, and venting correctly.
  • Assess foundation design and settlement risks.
  • Apply fabrication, welding, and erection requirements.
  • Plan inspection and testing for new tanks.
  • Recognize and prevent common tank design and construction errors.
