Course Overview

Steel is the material of choice for industrial plants, warehouses, long-span roofs, high-rise frames, pipe racks, bridges, and modular facilities across the Gulf and the wider Middle East, where speed of construction, high strength-to-weight ratio, and adaptability are critical to project success. Designing steel structures well, however, requires more than reading forces from an analysis model. Engineers must understand how slender members buckle, how sections yield and lose stability, how connections transfer load, and how fabrication and erection realities affect the final structure. The Steel Structure Design & Engineering Training Course focuses on the design of structural steel members, connections, and framing systems using the limit states approach adopted by widely used codes such as AISC 360 and Eurocode 3. Participants review steel grades, rolled and built-up sections, material behavior, loads and load combinations, and the principles of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Strength Design (ASD), together with the partial factor format used in European practice. The program then works through the design of tension members, columns, beams, and beam-columns, with particular attention to flexural, torsional, local, and lateral-torsional buckling, shear resistance, and combined axial and bending interaction. Participants also design bolted and welded connections, including shear, moment, bracing, and base plate connections, and examine how connection choices influence cost, fabrication, and structural behavior. The final part of the course addresses frame stability, bracing systems, second-order effects, and serviceability checks for deflection, drift, and floor vibration. It also covers the practical engineering issues that determine whether a steel structure performs as designed: fabrication tolerances, erection sequencing and temporary stability, corrosion protection systems suited to aggressive coastal and desert environments, fire protection strategies, and quality control and inspection of bolting and welding. Through worked design examples, hand calculations, case studies of steel structure failures, and group design exercises, participants strengthen their ability to produce safe, economical, and buildable steel designs and to review the designs and shop drawings of others with confidence.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the mechanical properties of structural steel grades and the behavior of rolled, welded, and cold-formed sections under load.
  • Determine design loads and apply load combinations appropriate to LRFD, ASD, and partial factor design formats.
  • Apply limit states design principles as adopted in widely used codes such as AISC 360 and Eurocode 3.
  • Design tension members considering gross section yielding, net section rupture, block shear, and connection effects.
  • Design compression members considering effective length, slenderness, flexural, torsional, and local buckling.
  • Design steel beams for flexure and shear, including section classification and lateral-torsional buckling resistance.
  • Evaluate beam-columns subjected to combined axial force and bending using code interaction approaches.
  • Design bolted and welded connections for shear, tension, moment, and bracing forces.
  • Assess frame stability, bracing requirements, and second-order effects in braced and moment-resisting steel frames.
  • Verify serviceability requirements for deflection, lateral drift, and floor vibration in steel structures.
  • Specify appropriate corrosion protection and fire protection systems for steel structures in regional environmental conditions.
  • Develop fabrication, erection, and inspection requirements that support quality and safety on steel construction projects.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for structural engineers, civil engineers, design engineers, and senior engineers responsible for the design, checking, and approval of steel buildings, industrial structures, pipe racks, platforms, sheds, and other steel-framed facilities. It is equally relevant to engineers moving into steel design from other structural backgrounds who need a structured grounding in steel member and connection design. It is also suitable for consultants, project engineers, site engineers, fabrication and erection engineers, shop drawing checkers, QA/QC engineers, and welding and coating inspectors working for contractors, steel fabricators, engineering consultancies, and owner organizations. Professionals in oil and gas, petrochemicals, power and utilities, logistics, infrastructure, and government projects departments will benefit from the practical focus on design review, fabrication quality, and durability. The course is particularly valuable for technical managers and engineering leads who review design submissions, approve connection designs and shop drawings, or oversee steel construction packages and need to judge whether a steel design is safe, economical, and buildable.

Learning Outcomes

  • Select suitable steel grades and section types for different structural applications and environments.
  • Establish design loads and load combinations and apply LRFD, ASD, or partial factor design consistently.
  • Size tension members and verify yielding, rupture, and block shear resistance.
  • Design columns and compression members against flexural, torsional, and local buckling.
  • Design beams for bending and shear and determine the bracing needed to control lateral-torsional buckling.
  • Check beam-columns under combined axial force and bending, including second-order amplification.
  • Design and detail bolted and welded shear, moment, bracing, and base plate connections.
  • Evaluate the stability of steel frames and specify effective bracing systems.
  • Verify deflection, drift, and floor vibration performance against serviceability criteria.
  • Specify corrosion and fire protection systems suited to project exposure and fire safety requirements.
  • Review shop drawings, fabrication and erection procedures, and inspection records for compliance with the design intent.
