Course Overview

This advanced practical course develops the ability to use Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor process performance, distinguish normal process variation from abnormal conditions, and prevent quality problems before they become recurring defects. The programme focuses on applying statistical thinking directly to operational and quality decisions. Participants work with process data to select appropriate control charts, establish meaningful control limits, interpret process behaviour, investigate special causes, and determine whether a process is stable and capable of consistently meeting requirements. The course also connects SPC with process capability analysis, root cause investigation, corrective action, quality improvement, and performance monitoring. Practical exercises are used throughout to strengthen data interpretation and decision-making rather than relying only on theoretical statistical concepts.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyse the principles of statistical process control and statistical thinking.
  • Distinguish common-cause variation from special-cause variation.
  • Evaluate process data to determine stability and consistency.
  • Select appropriate control charts for different types of process data.
  • Calculate and interpret control limits and process performance indicators.
  • Analyse control charts to identify abnormal process behaviour.
  • Investigate assignable causes of variation using structured analysis.
  • Apply process capability concepts to evaluate performance against specifications.
  • Interpret capability indices and identify limitations in capability analysis.
  • Develop appropriate responses to out-of-control conditions.
  • Integrate SPC with root cause analysis, corrective action, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish practical SPC monitoring methods for sustainable process performance.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for Quality Managers, Quality Engineers, QA/QC professionals, Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Managers, Operations Supervisors, and Continuous Improvement specialists involved in process monitoring and quality improvement. It is also suitable for professionals working in production, maintenance, laboratory operations, reliability, process improvement, operational excellence, and performance management where process data is used to support operational decisions. The programme is particularly relevant to organizations seeking to reduce process variation, improve consistency, prevent defects, strengthen process capability, and establish data-driven quality control practices.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role of SPC in controlling and improving process performance.
  • Identify different sources and patterns of process variation.
  • Determine whether observed variation is common cause or special cause.
  • Select suitable control charts based on data type and process characteristics.
  • Construct and interpret control charts using real process data.
  • Identify trends, shifts, cycles, and unusual patterns in process behaviour.
  • Investigate potential causes of out-of-control conditions.
  • Assess process stability before performing capability analysis.
  • Calculate and interpret process capability and performance measures.
  • Recommend appropriate actions based on SPC findings.
  • Link SPC results with root cause analysis and corrective improvement activities.
  • Establish an effective SPC monitoring approach for critical processes.
