Course Overview

Standard work and process standardization are essential practices for achieving consistent operational performance, reducing process variation, and maintaining reliable quality across organizational activities. By defining the best currently known method for performing each task, organizations can improve productivity, minimize errors, strengthen operational control, and establish a foundation for continuous improvement. This course provides a practical framework for developing, documenting, implementing, and maintaining standardized work procedures across manufacturing and service environments. Participants will explore work sequence definition, cycle time analysis, standard work instructions, process mapping, visual management, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and performance monitoring. The programme also examines how standardization supports Lean management, quality assurance, employee training, operational safety, and process improvement. Through practical exercises and workplace scenarios, participants will learn to analyse existing workflows, identify inconsistencies, develop clear work standards, and establish methods for verifying compliance and effectiveness. The course emphasizes employee involvement, practical documentation, visual instructions, and systematic review to ensure that standardized processes remain effective, adaptable, and aligned with operational requirements.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the principles and operational benefits of standard work and process standardization.
  • Analyse existing workflows and identify process variation, inefficiencies, and recurring errors.
  • Develop standardized work procedures aligned with operational and quality requirements.
  • Apply process mapping, work sequence analysis, and cycle time measurement techniques.
  • Create standard operating procedures, work instructions, and visual job aids.

Standard Work Fundamentals and Process Assessment

  • Principles, objectives, and benefits of standard work and process standardization.
  • The relationship between standard work, Lean management, quality, productivity, and operational safety.
  • Identifying variation, inconsistent work practices, rework, and process inefficiencies.
  • Mapping current-state workflows and understanding process inputs, outputs, and dependencies.
  • Defining the best currently known method for performing a task.
  • Identifying critical process steps, quality checkpoints, and safety requirements.
  • Assessing existing procedures, work instructions, and documentation gaps.
  • Establishing baseline performance measures for standardized work initiatives.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyse a representative operational process, identify variations and inefficiencies, and define the priority tasks requiring standardization.
Day 2

Developing Standard Work and Work Instructions

  • Defining work sequences, task steps, responsibilities, and operating conditions.
  • Analysing cycle time, takt time, and work content where applicable.
  • Developing standard work combinations and balancing manual and machine activities.
  • Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and detailed work instructions.
  • Defining process parameters, acceptance criteria, inspection points, and safety precautions.
  • Using photographs, diagrams, flowcharts, and visual instructions to improve clarity.
  • Applying consistent formats, terminology, document identifiers, and revision controls.
  • Validating work standards through observation, employee feedback, and operational testing.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a standardized work instruction for a selected task, including the work sequence, key parameters, quality checkpoints, safety requirements, and acceptance criteria.
Day 3

Implementing Standardized Processes and Visual Management

  • Planning the rollout of standardized work across teams, shifts, and departments.
  • Communicating new work standards and defining employee responsibilities.
  • Training employees through demonstrations, guided practice, and competency verification.
  • Applying visual management to make process requirements accessible at the point of work.
  • Establishing workplace organization and consistent operating conditions.
  • Integrating standardized work into production, service delivery, and maintenance activities.
  • Managing deviations, exceptions, and situations where standard procedures cannot be followed.
  • Coordinating supervisors, process owners, quality teams, and frontline employees during implementation.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop an implementation plan for a standardized process, including training activities, communication methods, visual controls, responsibilities, and compliance checks.
Day 4

Compliance Monitoring, Process Audits, and Corrective Actions

  • Establishing methods to verify adherence to standardized work.
  • Conducting process observations, layered process audits, and compliance checks.
  • Identifying deviations between documented procedures and actual work practices.
  • Analysing the causes of non-compliance, recurring errors, and process variation.
  • Applying root cause analysis and corrective action techniques.
  • Developing process compliance indicators and standard work performance dashboards.
  • Managing non-conformities, documenting corrective actions, and verifying effectiveness.
  • Distinguishing justified process improvements from uncontrolled procedural changes.
