Course Overview

The Stakeholder Management for Complex Projects Training Course equips project and programme managers, sponsors, PMO professionals, and project leaders with the strategies, tools, and interpersonal skills needed to identify, understand, engage, and influence stakeholders in complex projects where success depends as much on relationships, alignment, and trust as on technical delivery. In government entities, ministries, public authorities, banks, healthcare systems, energy and utility companies, construction, infrastructure, and technology organizations, and large corporations, complex projects involve many stakeholders with different and sometimes conflicting interests, including senior executives, multiple departments, regulators, government agencies, contractors and partners, communities, customers, citizens, and the media. In complex projects, stakeholder issues are among the most frequent causes of delay, rework, cost increases, and failure. Important stakeholders may be identified too late, their interests and concerns may be misunderstood, and influential individuals and informal networks may be overlooked. Engagement may be limited to one-way communication, expectations may not be managed, and resistance may be addressed only after it has become entrenched. Conflicts between stakeholders may escalate, sponsors and executives may disengage, and external stakeholders such as regulators, communities, and the public may feel excluded, leading to objections, approvals delays, and reputational risk. This course provides a structured and practical approach to stakeholder management in complex projects, informed by recognized project management standards, stakeholder theory, and international public participation practices. Participants learn the sources of stakeholder complexity, how to identify internal, external, visible, and hidden stakeholders, and how to analyze them using power and interest grids, salience models, influence and relationship mapping, and engagement assessment matrices that compare current and desired levels of engagement. The program covers understanding stakeholder interests, needs, concerns, motivations, and cultural and political dynamics, developing stakeholder engagement strategies and plans, and designing communication approaches tailored to different audiences. Participants then develop skills for building trust and relationships, influencing without formal authority, principled negotiation, managing conflict, managing expectations, addressing resistance, and building coalitions of support. The course also addresses engaging sponsors and senior executives, working with regulators and government agencies, engaging communities and the public using recognized levels of participation from informing to collaboration, managing stakeholders in multi-party projects with contractors, partners, and joint ventures, handling difficult stakeholders, feedback and grievance mechanisms, ethical engagement, and monitoring and adjusting engagement effectiveness throughout the project lifecycle. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with stakeholder mapping workshops, case studies of complex public and private sector projects, negotiation and influence role plays, conflict resolution exercises, and the development of a stakeholder engagement plan for a real or case study project. Participants leave with a stakeholder identification checklist, a stakeholder register template, stakeholder analysis and mapping tools, an engagement assessment matrix, a stakeholder engagement and communication plan template, an influence and negotiation preparation guide, a conflict and resistance management guide, and an engagement effectiveness monitoring template.
