Stablecoins have moved from a niche instrument of crypto-asset trading into a serious topic for payments, settlement and banking supervision. These privately issued tokens promise a stable value against a reference currency, yet their safety depends entirely on reserves, redemption rights and governance that differ widely from one arrangement to another. This course gives participants a clear, practical understanding of how stablecoins and related digital assets are designed, used, risk-managed and regulated. Participants will compare fiat-backed, crypto-collateralized, commodity-linked and algorithmic models, and examine how issuance and redemption work in primary and secondary markets. The course analyzes reserve composition, custody and segregation, attestation versus full audit, and the run dynamics that lead to de-pegging, using anonymized episodes to show how confidence is lost and restored. The program then looks at real applications, including cross-border payments, settlement of tokenized assets, corporate treasury use and tokenized bank deposits, and at the risks they create for banks: reserve, liquidity, operational, smart contract, custody and consumer protection risk, together with the prudential treatment of crypto-asset exposures. Central bank digital currencies, blockchain engineering and AML programs are treated in separate courses; here the focus is on private stablecoins and their oversight. Through case studies, reserve stress tests, risk mapping exercises and regulatory comparisons, participants will examine international recommendations from bodies such as the Financial Stability Board, the Basel Committee and FATF, review how licensing regimes approach issuers and service providers, and build a practical roadmap for their institution's stablecoin policy.
