Course Overview

The Solar PV and Wind Farm Safety Training Course equips HSE managers, site supervisors, and construction and O&M engineers with the practical knowledge needed to control the hazards specific to utility-scale solar photovoltaic plants and wind farms, from construction and commissioning through long-term operation and maintenance. Solar and wind capacity across the Gulf and Africa is being built in desert, coastal, and remote locations, where extreme heat, dust, long travel distances, and limited emergency support combine with electrical and work-at-height risks unlike those found in conventional power plants. The course focuses on the site hazards that general electrical safety and regulatory courses do not cover in depth. Participants examine heat stress, module and tracker handling, pile driving, and plant movement on large solar sites; photovoltaic DC circuits, which stay energized whenever modules receive light; DC arc and ground faults; and the safe isolation of strings, combiner boxes, inverters, and medium-voltage equipment. For wind, the program covers tower climbing and fall protection, rotor locking, the isolation of yaw, pitch, hydraulic, and stored energy, confined spaces in hubs and blades, nacelle fires, and rescue from height. Participants work with the standards that shape safe practice on renewable energy sites, including ISO 45001, NFPA 70E, IEC 62446 for photovoltaic system testing and documentation, and the IEC 61400 series for wind turbines, and they learn how HSE duties are shared between developers, independent power producers, EPC contractors, and O&M providers. Permit-to-work and switching authorization, contractor management, remote-site emergency planning, the hazards of co-located battery energy storage, and incident investigation complete the scope. The course is delivered through site case studies, hazard mapping exercises, isolation procedure drafting, rescue scenario planning, and a final O&M safety workshop. Participants leave with a site hazard register, a heat stress management plan template, a PV safe isolation procedure, a turbine rescue plan outline, and an O&M safety management plan they can adapt to their own assets.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the hazard profile of solar PV plants and wind farms across construction and operation.
  • Define HSE roles between developers, independent power producers, EPC contractors, and O&M providers.
  • Apply ISO 45001, NFPA 70E, IEC 62446, and the IEC 61400 series to site safety planning.
  • Develop heat stress management arrangements for outdoor work in hot, dusty desert environments.
  • Control handling, lifting, pile driving, and vehicle risks during module and tracker installation.
  • Assess DC arc, ground fault, and shock hazards in photovoltaic string and combiner box work.
  • Design safe isolation and permit-to-work procedures for strings, inverters, and medium-voltage equipment.
  • Assess work-at-height, stored energy, and confined space risks in wind turbine towers, nacelles, and hubs.
  • Plan rescue and evacuation from turbine nacelles, towers, and blade access positions.
  • Prepare emergency plans for solar field fires, nacelle fires, battery incidents, and medical evacuation.
  • Establish O&M safety controls covering contractors, leading indicators, and incident learning.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for HSE managers, HSE advisers, and site safety officers on solar and wind projects, as well as construction managers, site supervisors, commissioning engineers, O&M managers, electrical engineers and technicians, wind turbine technicians, and contractor safety coordinators. It is equally relevant for asset managers, owner's engineers, project managers, the technical advisers of lenders and insurers, and officials in energy ministries, electricity regulators, and civil defense authorities who oversee renewable energy facilities. Professionals in independent power producers, renewable energy developers, EPC contractors, O&M service companies, electricity and water utilities, national energy companies, oil and gas companies building solar and wind capacity, and government renewable energy programs will find the course directly applicable. It is particularly valuable for teams moving from conventional power, oil and gas, or general construction into solar and wind work, and for organizations preparing to take over the operation of newly built plants and wind farms.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify solar and wind site hazards at each stage of the project life cycle.
  • Allocate HSE responsibilities between developer, EPC contractor, O&M provider, and owner.
  • Prepare a heat stress management plan for desert and remote sites.
  • Plan safe module handling, lifting, and plant movement on solar sites.
  • Apply suitable controls for energized photovoltaic string and combiner box work.
  • Write a safe isolation procedure for strings, inverters, and medium-voltage equipment.
  • Apply fall protection, rotor locking, and energy isolation on wind turbines.
  • Outline rescue and evacuation plans for nacelles, towers, and blades.
  • Develop emergency arrangements for fires, battery incidents, and medical evacuation.
  • Investigate site incidents and convert the findings into corrective actions.
  • Build an O&M safety plan with permits, contractor controls, and indicators.
