Course Overview

The Small Satellite (CubeSat) Missions & Space Communications Training Course provides practical knowledge of small satellite mission design, CubeSat architecture, spacecraft subsystems, and the communication technologies required to establish reliable links between satellites and ground stations. It explores the engineering principles that govern the development, deployment, operation, and monitoring of small satellite missions for scientific research, Earth observation, telecommunications, and technology demonstration. The course examines CubeSat standards, satellite bus architecture, onboard power systems, attitude determination and control, payload integration, and communication subsystem design. Participants explore how size, mass, power consumption, antenna configuration, frequency selection, and orbital characteristics influence mission performance and communication capabilities. Particular emphasis is placed on space communication links, radio frequency fundamentals, uplink and downlink design, link budget calculations, antenna selection, modulation, coding, and data transmission. Participants also examine telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C), ground station architecture, satellite visibility, contact scheduling, Doppler compensation, and the operational challenges associated with low Earth orbit (LEO) missions. Through practical exercises, engineering calculations, and mission-based scenarios, participants develop the skills required to assess CubeSat communication requirements, evaluate satellite-to-ground link performance, plan ground station contacts, and identify common communication faults. The course also addresses mission operations, data handling, testing, and reliability considerations throughout the small satellite lifecycle.

Day 1

Small Satellite Fundamentals and CubeSat Mission Architecture

  • Introduction to small satellites and their applications in Earth observation, scientific research, communications, and technology demonstration.
  • CubeSat concepts, standard unit configurations, dimensions, mass constraints, and deployment considerations.
  • Mission lifecycle: concept development, requirements definition, preliminary design, integration, testing, launch, commissioning, and operations.
  • Spacecraft bus architecture and the relationship between the platform and mission payload.
  • Major subsystems: electrical power, onboard computing, attitude determination and control, thermal management, propulsion where applicable, and communications.
  • Payload requirements, data generation, onboard storage, and data handling.
  • Power, mass, volume, thermal, and interface constraints in CubeSat design.
  • Orbital fundamentals, including low Earth orbit characteristics, orbital period, altitude, and satellite ground tracks.
  • Mission requirements and the trade-offs between payload capability, satellite resources, and operational objectives.
  • Introduction to systems engineering, requirements traceability, and interface control documentation.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a preliminary mission concept for an Earth observation CubeSat, defining its mission objectives, orbit assumptions, payload requirements, key subsystems, and principal engineering constraints.
Day 2

CubeSat Communication Systems and RF Engineering Fundamentals

  • Communication subsystem architecture and its integration with the spacecraft bus.
  • Radio frequency fundamentals, frequency, wavelength, bandwidth, transmit power, and antenna gain.
  • Overview of commonly used satellite communication bands, including VHF, UHF, S-band, and higher-frequency options where appropriate.
  • Selection of uplink and downlink frequencies according to mission requirements and applicable spectrum authorization.
  • Antenna types and configurations for CubeSats, including monopole, dipole, patch, and deployable antennas.
  • Antenna polarization, radiation patterns, orientation, and the influence of spacecraft attitude on link performance.
  • Transmitters, receivers, transceivers, RF front ends, filters, and communication interfaces.
  • Modulation and coding fundamentals, data rates, bandwidth efficiency, and error protection.
  • Communication protocols, packet framing, addressing, error detection, and data integrity.
  • Onboard data buffering, storage capacity, and prioritization of telemetry and payload data.
  • RF interference, electromagnetic compatibility, and coordination between communications and other spacecraft subsystems.

Satellite Link Budgets, Orbital Effects, and Communication Performance

  • Principles and structure of satellite communication link budgets.
  • Transmitter output power, antenna gain, feeder losses, free-space path loss, and receiver sensitivity.
  • Estimating received signal power and determining basic link margins.
  • Ground station antenna gain, receiver noise figure, system noise temperature, and signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Differences between uplink and downlink engineering requirements.
  • Effects of orbital altitude, slant range, satellite elevation angle, and ground station location on signal strength.
  • Doppler shift caused by relative satellite motion and its effect on frequency acquisition and tracking.
  • Satellite visibility, ground tracks, contact windows, and communication opportunities during an orbital pass.
  • Modulation, coding, and data-rate trade-offs under changing link conditions.
  • Antenna pointing, polarization mismatch, atmospheric effects, and other sources of signal degradation.

Ground Stations, TT&C, and Satellite Contact Planning

  • Ground station architecture and its role in CubeSat command, telemetry, and payload data reception.
  • Ground station antennas, rotators, transceivers, modems, software-defined radios, and data interfaces.
  • Telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) principles and their role in spacecraft monitoring and control.
  • Satellite acquisition, antenna pointing, azimuth and elevation tracking, and Doppler correction.
  • Predicting satellite passes and calculating ground station visibility windows.
  • Contact scheduling, pass prioritization, and coordination between multiple satellites and ground stations.
  • Uplink command preparation, authorization, transmission, and verification through returned telemetry.
  • Downlink reception, demodulation, packet decoding, data validation, and payload data transfer.
  • Ground station software, pass prediction tools, telemetry dashboards, and operational logs.
  • Managing missed passes, weak signals, unsuccessful contacts, and incomplete data transfers.
  • Ground station network coordination, data routing, and integration with mission control systems.
  • Operational documentation, contact reports, and communication performance records.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a ground station contact plan for a CubeSat in low Earth orbit, identifying pass windows, communication priorities, antenna tracking requirements, and the procedures for command transmission and telemetry reception.
Day 5

Mission Integration, Testing, Troubleshooting, and Operations

  • Integration of communication hardware and software with the CubeSat platform.
  • Verification of electrical, mechanical, RF, and data interfaces before launch.
  • Functional testing of transmitters, receivers, antennas, onboard communication software, and ground station equipment.
  • Environmental testing considerations, including vibration, thermal cycling, and vacuum testing where applicable.
  • End-to-end communication testing and verification of command, telemetry, and payload data flows.
  • Pre-launch readiness reviews, configuration control, and communication subsystem acceptance criteria.
  • Initial acquisition and commissioning procedures following deployment into orbit.
  • Monitoring spacecraft health, power consumption, communication status, and onboard data storage.
  • Troubleshooting low received signal levels, frequency offsets, packet loss, corrupted data, and communication interruptions.
