Course Overview

The Seven Basic Quality Tools are fundamental techniques for identifying quality problems, analysing process performance, investigating causes of defects, and supporting evidence-based decision-making. Used across manufacturing, service delivery, engineering, and operational environments, these tools help organizations move beyond assumptions and subjective judgments toward structured quality analysis and measurable improvement. This course provides practical training in the seven tools: check sheets, histograms, Pareto charts, cause-and-effect diagrams, scatter diagrams, control charts, and flowcharts. Participants learn how to collect and organize data, visualize performance patterns, distinguish significant problems from minor issues, investigate potential root causes, and monitor process stability. The course also explores how these tools support quality control, corrective actions, process improvement, and the prevention of recurring defects. Through hands-on exercises and realistic workplace scenarios, participants develop the ability to select the appropriate quality tool for different problems, interpret findings accurately, and translate analysis into practical improvement actions. The emphasis is on applying the tools systematically to improve product and service quality, reduce defects and variation, strengthen process consistency, and support continuous improvement.

Quality Fundamentals, Data Collection, and Process Visualization

  • Principles of quality management and the role of data-driven problem-solving.
  • Overview of the Seven Basic Quality Tools and their applications.
  • Understanding qualitative and quantitative quality data.
  • Designing check sheets for defect recording, inspection, and process monitoring.
  • Data classification, sampling considerations, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Developing histograms to visualize distributions and process variation.
  • Interpreting frequency patterns, spread, and potential abnormalities.
  • Selecting appropriate tools based on problem characteristics and data requirements.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a check sheet and construct a histogram using a sample quality dataset to identify defect patterns and variation.
Day 2

Pareto Analysis and Cause-and-Effect Investigation

  • Principles of Pareto analysis and the 80/20 concept in quality improvement.
  • Categorizing defects, complaints, rework, and operational failures.
  • Constructing Pareto charts and ranking problems by frequency, cost, or impact.
  • Distinguishing high-priority issues from less significant problems.
  • Understanding cause-and-effect diagrams and their structure.
  • Applying the 6M framework: Manpower, Machine, Method, Material, Measurement, and Mother Nature (Environment).
  • Conducting structured brainstorming and identifying potential root causes.
  • Validating suspected causes using evidence rather than assumptions.
  • Practical Exercise: Analyse a defect dataset using a Pareto chart, then develop a cause-and-effect diagram to investigate the leading quality problem.
Day 3

Scatter Diagrams and Process Flowcharts

  • Understanding relationships between variables in quality and process performance.
  • Constructing scatter diagrams and interpreting positive, negative, and weak correlations.
  • Recognizing the limitations of correlation and avoiding unsupported causal conclusions.
  • Identifying potential relationships between operating conditions and quality outcomes.
  • Mapping process sequences using flowcharts and standard symbols.
  • Identifying bottlenecks, unnecessary steps, decision delays, and rework loops.
  • Analysing handoffs, inspection points, and process control weaknesses.
  • Using process mapping to support standardization and improvement planning.
  • Practical Exercise: Develop a scatter diagram to investigate a possible relationship between two process variables and map a service or production process to identify improvement opportunities.
Day 4

Control Charts and Statistical Process Monitoring

  • Principles of process stability and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Understanding common-cause and special-cause variation.
  • Selecting suitable control charts for different types of data.
