Course Overview

This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to design secure network architectures and implement effective network segmentation strategies. It focuses on reducing attack surfaces, controlling communication between network zones, limiting unauthorized access, and strengthening protection across enterprise IT environments. Participants explore secure network architecture principles, segmentation models, VLANs, subnetting, access control lists, firewalls, microsegmentation, zero-trust networking, and network access control. The programme also addresses risk assessment, secure traffic flows, monitoring, troubleshooting, and design validation to help organizations build resilient networks that support operational requirements while maintaining strong security controls.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the principles of secure network architecture and defense in depth.
  • Assess network security risks and identify weaknesses in existing network designs.
  • Design network zones and segmentation boundaries based on business and security requirements.
  • Configure VLANs, subnets, and access control mechanisms to separate network resources.
  • Apply firewall rules and access control lists to regulate inter-segment communication.
  • Implement microsegmentation principles to restrict lateral movement within networks.
  • Integrate zero-trust principles into network access and resource protection strategies.
  • Develop segmentation policies for users, servers, applications, operational technology, and sensitive data environments.
  • Validate network segmentation effectiveness through testing, monitoring, and traffic analysis.
  • Establish network design documentation, governance procedures, and continuous improvement practices.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for network engineers, network architects, cybersecurity professionals, network administrators, infrastructure specialists, and IT security teams responsible for designing, operating, or protecting enterprise networks. It is particularly valuable for professionals involved in network modernization, security architecture reviews, infrastructure transformation, access control implementation, and the protection of critical systems and sensitive information. The programme is also suitable for IT managers, information security managers, security operations personnel, systems engineers, and technical consultants working in government entities, ministries, banks, financial institutions, oil and gas companies, industrial facilities, and large corporations. Participants should have a basic understanding of TCP/IP networking, routing, switching, and common network security controls.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate network architectures against established security design principles.
  • Identify trust boundaries, critical assets, and high-risk communication paths.
  • Develop network segmentation strategies aligned with organizational risk and operational needs.
  • Design VLANs, subnets, security zones, and controlled inter-zone communication.
  • Apply firewall policies and access control lists to enforce segmentation requirements.
  • Explain how microsegmentation can limit lateral movement and contain security incidents.
  • Incorporate zero-trust concepts into network access and resource protection designs.
  • Define appropriate segmentation approaches for corporate IT, cloud environments, and operational technology.
  • Test segmentation controls and interpret network traffic and monitoring results.
  • Produce network security diagrams, implementation plans, and recommendations for ongoing improvement.
