Course Overview

This advanced practical course focuses specifically on Scope 3 value-chain emissions, the indirect emissions that arise upstream and downstream of an organization's own operations. It builds on existing Scope 1 and 2 inventories and applies the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard to turn procurement, logistics, product, and investment data into a defensible value-chain inventory. The program covers all fifteen Scope 3 categories, relevance screening and hotspot analysis, boundary and minimum-boundary decisions, and the full range of calculation methods, from spend-based and average-data estimates to hybrid and supplier-specific approaches. Participants will examine emission factor selection, allocation, double counting, and how methods should evolve as better data becomes available. Particular emphasis is placed on supplier engagement: segmenting suppliers, designing data requests, collecting and validating supplier-specific and product-level data, scoring data quality, and embedding carbon data requirements in procurement processes. For banks and investors, the course addresses financed emissions under the PCAF methodology. Through practical exercises, participants will screen a value chain, calculate priority categories, build a supplier engagement plan, and prepare Scope 3 disclosures aligned with IFRS S2, including measurement approach, inputs, assumptions, and data quality.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the structure and requirements of the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
  • Distinguish the fifteen upstream and downstream Scope 3 categories and their boundaries.
  • Conduct relevance screening to identify Scope 3 hotspots across the value chain.
  • Map procurement, logistics, and investment data to Scope 3 categories.
  • Compare spend-based, average-data, hybrid, and supplier-specific calculation methods.
  • Select and justify emission factors, allocation approaches, and estimation assumptions.
  • Calculate emissions for priority categories such as purchased goods and transportation.
  • Apply the PCAF methodology to estimate financed emissions for lending and investment portfolios.
  • Design supplier segmentation, data requests, and engagement programs for primary emissions data.
  • Assess and score Scope 3 data quality and plan improvements over successive reporting cycles.
  • Prevent double counting and document methodology changes and recalculation triggers.
  • Prepare Scope 3 disclosures aligned with IFRS S2 requirements.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for sustainability and climate managers, carbon accounting specialists, ESG and sustainability reporting teams, and procurement and supply chain professionals responsible for measuring value-chain emissions or collecting supplier data. It is also suitable for financial reporting and investor relations teams, risk and internal audit professionals, credit and portfolio analysts working on financed emissions, logistics and category managers, and commercial teams answering buyers' carbon data requests. The program is particularly relevant to listed companies preparing IFRS S2 disclosures, banks and investors measuring financed emissions, exporters supplying global buyers, and energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, and government organizations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret the requirements of the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
  • Classify value-chain activities into the correct upstream and downstream Scope 3 categories.
  • Screen Scope 3 categories for relevance and identify emissions hotspots.
  • Select appropriate calculation methods for each priority category.
  • Calculate Scope 3 emissions using spend-based, average-data, hybrid, and supplier-specific data.
  • Estimate financed emissions for loans and investments using the PCAF methodology.
  • Apply allocation rules and controls that prevent double counting.
  • Segment suppliers and design targeted emissions data requests.
  • Validate supplier and product carbon data before inclusion in the inventory.
  • Score data quality and set a roadmap toward more primary data.
  • Document methods, assumptions, exclusions, and recalculation decisions.
  • Prepare Scope 3 disclosures that meet IFRS S2 requirements and support assurance.
