Course Overview

The Scaffolding Design & Inspection Training Course equips engineers, supervisors, inspectors, and HSE professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, specify, design, inspect, and manage scaffolding safely and in accordance with recognized international standards and good practice. Scaffolding is used extensively in construction, maintenance, shutdowns and turnarounds, and plant modifications in oil and gas, petrochemical, power, utilities, and building projects. Scaffold collapses, falls from height, and falling objects remain among the most serious causes of workplace fatalities and injuries, and many incidents result from inadequate design, overloading, missing ties or bracing, poor foundations, unauthorized alterations, and ineffective inspection. The course covers scaffolding from selection and design to inspection and management. Participants learn scaffold types, including tube and fitting, system, frame, mobile tower, cantilever, birdcage, hanging, and suspended scaffolds, scaffold components, and the requirements of recognized international and national standards and guidance for scaffold design, components, and work at height. The program then addresses design principles, including load classes, dead, imposed, and wind loads, bay dimensions, ties and anchors, bracing, foundations and base conditions, sheeting and netting, loading bays and cantilevers, and when a bespoke engineered design is required. Participants also examine erection, alteration, and dismantling practices, scaffolder competence, fall protection during erection, scaffold tagging and handover, inspection requirements and techniques, common defects, scaffolding in operating plants and special environments, mobile towers, falling object prevention, and scaffold management systems and contractor control. The course is delivered through design examples, drawing reviews, inspection exercises using photographs and case studies, and incident analysis. Participants leave with a scaffold selection guide, a scaffold design and load check worksheet, a scaffold inspection checklist, a scaffold handover and tagging procedure template, and a scaffold management system checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the hazards associated with scaffolding and the main causes of scaffold-related incidents on Day 1.
  • Identify scaffold types, including tube and fitting, system, frame, mobile tower, cantilever, birdcage, hanging, and suspended scaffolds, and their applications.
  • Identify scaffold components and their functions, including standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, base plates, couplers, decks, guardrails, toe boards, access, and ties.
  • Apply recognized international and national standards and guidance for scaffold design, components, and work at height.
  • Determine scaffold loads, including dead, imposed, and wind loads, and select appropriate load classes and bay dimensions.
  • Design ties, anchors, and bracing and specify tie testing requirements.
  • Assess foundations and base conditions and the effects of sheeting, netting, loading bays, and cantilevers.
  • Determine when a standard configuration is acceptable and when a bespoke engineered design is required, and review scaffold design drawings and calculations.
  • Apply safe practices for scaffold erection, alteration, and dismantling, including scaffolder competence and fall protection during erection.
  • Apply scaffold handover, tagging, and inspection requirements, including inspection frequency, checklists, and defect identification.
  • Manage scaffolding in operating plants and special environments, including hot work areas, confined spaces, offshore installations, and near overhead power lines, and prevent falling objects.
  • Establish scaffold management systems, including planning, request, approval, contractor control, and records, by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for civil, structural, mechanical, and construction engineers, scaffolding supervisors and coordinators, scaffold inspectors, and HSE professionals responsible for scaffolding activities. It is also relevant for maintenance and turnaround planners and supervisors, project and site managers, permit-to-work issuers, contractor supervisors, and QA/QC personnel. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, and fertilizer plants; in power generation, water, and desalination utilities; in construction, building, and infrastructure projects; in shipyards and offshore facilities; and in scaffolding, maintenance, and engineering contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the main hazards of scaffolding and how incidents occur.
  • Select the right scaffold type for different tasks and locations.
  • Identify scaffold components and their correct use.
  • Apply relevant standards and guidance to scaffold work.
  • Calculate and check scaffold loads.
  • Specify ties, anchors, and bracing correctly.
  • Assess foundations and the effects of wind, sheeting, and netting.
  • Recognize when an engineered scaffold design is required.
  • Supervise safe erection, alteration, and dismantling.
  • Inspect scaffolds thoroughly and identify defects.
  • Manage scaffolding safely in operating plants and special environments.
  • Implement an effective scaffold management system.
