Course Overview

The Satellite Link Budget Analysis & RF Planning Training Course equips satellite, RF, and telecommunications engineers with the in-depth analytical skills needed to calculate, optimize, and verify satellite link budgets and to plan the RF chain, carriers, and transponder resources for reliable and cost-effective satellite services. In government, defense, broadcasting, telecommunications, banking, energy, oil and gas, maritime, and aviation networks, the link budget is the foundation of every satellite link design. It determines antenna sizes, amplifier power, modulation and coding, bandwidth and power requirements, availability, and ultimately the cost of satellite capacity. Errors or oversimplifications in link budgets are a common cause of underperforming satellite networks. Links may be designed with insufficient margin for rain fade in higher frequency bands, interference contributions may be ignored, transponder power and bandwidth may be poorly balanced, and amplifier backoff and carrier sizing may be incorrect. Antenna pointing, polarization, cable and waveguide losses, and terrestrial interference risks may be overlooked during site planning. As a result, organizations may experience frequent outages, lower throughput than expected, or pay for more capacity and equipment than necessary. This course provides a rigorous yet practical approach to satellite link budget analysis and RF planning. Participants learn decibel arithmetic and RF fundamentals, and the key parameters of satellite links, including EIRP, G/T, antenna gain and efficiency, pointing and polarization losses, slant range, and free space path loss. The program covers propagation impairments, including atmospheric gases, rain attenuation, cloud, scintillation, and depolarization, using recognized ITU-R propagation models, as well as system noise temperature, sky noise, and receiver noise. Participants calculate carrier-to-noise, carrier-to-noise density, energy-per-bit, and energy-per-symbol ratios, and include adjacent satellite, cross-polarization, intermodulation, and other interference contributions in aggregate link performance. The course then addresses transponder operation, including saturation flux density, input and output backoff, power-limited and bandwidth-limited operation, carrier sizing, occupied bandwidth, and power equivalent bandwidth, and the selection of modulation and coding schemes based on widely adopted satellite transmission standards. Participants also learn availability analysis and margin allocation, adaptive coding and modulation, uplink power control and site diversity, link budgets for star and mesh VSAT networks, high-throughput satellite beams, and low Earth orbit systems with varying range and Doppler, RF chain planning for amplifiers, converters, cables, and waveguides, frequency and carrier planning, site surveys and RF planning, and link verification through measurements. The course is delivered through an intensive, hands-on approach with extensive calculation exercises using spreadsheet-based link budget tools and realistic design scenarios. Participants leave with a complete link budget model, a rain attenuation and availability calculation tool, a transponder resource planning worksheet, an RF chain loss and gain budget template, a site survey and RF planning checklist, and a link verification test checklist.

  • Calculate propagation impairments, including atmospheric gas absorption, rain attenuation, cloud attenuation, scintillation, and depolarization, using recognized ITU-R models.
  • Calculate system noise temperature, including antenna, sky, and receiver noise contributions, and determine receiver G/T.
  • Calculate carrier-to-noise, carrier-to-noise density, energy-per-bit, and energy-per-symbol ratios for uplink and downlink paths.
  • Incorporate adjacent satellite, cross-polarization, intermodulation, and other interference contributions into aggregate link performance.
  • Analyze transponder operation, including saturation flux density, input and output backoff, and power-limited and bandwidth-limited conditions.
  • Determine carrier sizing, occupied bandwidth, and power equivalent bandwidth to optimize transponder resource use and cost.
  • Select appropriate modulation and coding schemes and apply adaptive coding and modulation to balance throughput and availability.
  • Calculate link availability and allocate margins, and evaluate uplink power control and site diversity as fade mitigation techniques.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for satellite engineers, RF engineers, telecommunications and transmission engineers, earth station and VSAT engineers, and network design engineers responsible for designing, planning, or optimizing satellite links. It is also highly relevant for satellite capacity planners, network operations center engineers, technical pre-sales and solution engineers, and spectrum and interference engineers who need a solid command of link analysis. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, regulators, and public safety and defense organizations operating satellite networks; in telecommunications operators, satellite operators, teleport and service providers, and broadcasters; in banks and financial institutions operating VSAT and backup networks; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, mining, maritime, and aviation organizations connecting remote and mobile sites. Technical managers who review link designs and procurement professionals evaluating satellite capacity offers will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Perform decibel calculations quickly and accurately for all elements of a satellite link.
  • Calculate EIRP, G/T, antenna gain, and path losses for any satellite link geometry.
  • Estimate rain and atmospheric attenuation for a given location, frequency, and availability target.
  • Determine system noise temperature and receiver sensitivity.
  • Build complete uplink, downlink, and end-to-end link budgets including interference.
  • Determine the transponder power and bandwidth required for a given carrier.
  • Select the most efficient modulation and coding for a link and explain the trade-offs.
