Course Overview

The Satellite Communications Systems Engineering Training Course equips engineers and technical professionals with a comprehensive, practical understanding of how satellite communication systems are designed, analyzed, deployed, and operated. Satellite communications provide essential connectivity for government and defense networks, emergency and disaster response, broadcasting, maritime and aviation services, remote energy and industrial sites, banking networks, and communities beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure. With the rapid growth of high-throughput satellites, low Earth orbit broadband constellations, and integration with terrestrial and 5G networks, the field is evolving quickly and demands strong systems engineering skills. Satellite communication projects involve complex trade-offs between coverage, capacity, availability, latency, cost, and regulatory constraints. Engineers must understand orbits, frequency bands, antennas, link budgets, modulation and coding, multiple access schemes, interference, ground segment architecture, and network performance, and how these elements interact. Poorly engineered systems may suffer from insufficient link margins, rain fade outages, interference, underused or insufficient capacity, and poor application performance, while procurement decisions may be made without a clear understanding of technical requirements and service options. This course provides a structured, end-to-end systems engineering view of satellite communications. Participants learn the fundamentals of satellite communications, orbit types including geostationary, medium Earth orbit, low Earth orbit, and highly elliptical orbits, basic orbital mechanics, coverage, and look angles, and the characteristics of frequency bands from L-band to Ka-band and beyond. The program covers spectrum management and international coordination under ITU Radio Regulations, satellite architecture including bus and payload, bent-pipe and regenerative transponders, and high-throughput spot beam systems, and antenna fundamentals including gain, beamwidth, EIRP, G/T, and phased arrays. Participants then develop complete link budgets, including free space loss, atmospheric and rain attenuation based on recognized ITU-R propagation models, noise, and carrier-to-noise and energy-per-bit ratios, and apply modulation, coding, and adaptive coding and modulation based on widely adopted standards such as DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X. The course also addresses multiple access techniques, ground segment design including earth stations, gateways, VSAT networks, teleports, telemetry, tracking, and command, and network operations centers, interference identification and mitigation, IP networking over satellite and latency management, non-geostationary constellations and non-terrestrial network integration with 5G, satcom security and anti-jamming, system requirements and availability engineering, capacity procurement, testing and commissioning, and operations and performance monitoring. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with link budget calculations, spreadsheet-based design tools, system architecture exercises, and case studies. Participants leave with a satcom requirements definition template, a link budget model, a frequency band and orbit selection guide, a ground segment architecture outline, an interference troubleshooting checklist, and a satellite communication system design proposal for a realistic scenario.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the fundamentals of satellite communications and the role of satcom in government, commercial, and critical infrastructure networks on Day 1.
  • Evaluate orbit types, including geostationary, medium Earth orbit, low Earth orbit, and highly elliptical orbits, in terms of coverage, latency, capacity, and cost.
  • Apply basic orbital mechanics concepts to determine coverage, visibility, and antenna look angles.
  • Assess frequency band characteristics from L-band to Ka-band and higher and select appropriate bands for different applications and environments.
  • Evaluate spectrum management and international coordination requirements under ITU Radio Regulations and national licensing frameworks.
  • Analyze satellite architecture, including bus and payload subsystems, bent-pipe and regenerative transponders, and high-throughput spot beam systems.
  • Apply antenna fundamentals, including gain, beamwidth, EIRP, G/T, and phased array concepts, to system design.
  • Develop complete uplink and downlink link budgets that account for free space loss, atmospheric and rain attenuation, noise, interference, and required margins.
  • Apply modulation, forward error correction, and adaptive coding and modulation techniques based on widely adopted satellite standards.
  • Evaluate multiple access techniques and ground segment architectures, including earth stations, gateways, VSAT networks, teleports, and network operations centers.
  • Assess interference sources, IP networking performance over satellite, non-geostationary constellations, 5G non-terrestrial network integration, and satcom security.
  • Design a satellite communication system proposal that meets defined requirements for coverage, capacity, availability, latency, security, and cost by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for telecommunications engineers, satellite and RF engineers, network engineers, systems engineers, and technical managers involved in designing, procuring, deploying, or operating satellite communication systems. It is also highly relevant for earth station and VSAT engineers, network operations center staff, spectrum management and regulatory professionals, and IT and infrastructure managers responsible for connectivity to remote or critical sites. It is particularly valuable for professionals in ministries, government entities, regulators, and public safety and defense organizations using satcom for secure networks, emergency communications, and national connectivity programs; in telecommunications operators, satellite service providers, and broadcasters; in banks and financial institutions using satellite links for branch networks and business continuity; and in energy, utilities, oil and gas, mining, maritime, and aviation organizations connecting remote and mobile operations. Project managers and procurement professionals responsible for satcom projects and capacity contracts will also benefit from the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how satellite communication systems work end to end.
  • Compare orbit options and select the most suitable approach for a given application.
  • Calculate coverage and antenna look angles for satellite links.
  • Select frequency bands based on propagation, equipment, regulatory, and cost considerations.
  • Describe the main satellite payload architectures and their implications for capacity and flexibility.
  • Size antennas and assess EIRP and G/T requirements.
  • Build and interpret complete link budgets and determine required margins.
  • Select modulation and coding schemes that balance throughput and availability.
