Safety valves and pressure relief valves (PSV / PRV) are the last line of defense protecting pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, and fired heaters from overpressure in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas facilities, and power plants. The Safety Valves: Inspection and Calibration per API 576 Training Course equips static equipment, inspection, and maintenance engineers and technicians with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to ensure that every valve opens at the correct set pressure, reseats tightly, and operates without chatter or blockage at the moment when its performance separates safe operation from a serious incident. The course content is built on the realities of static equipment maintenance in refinery units, where specific problems recur and are well known to anyone who has worked in a valve shop or during a turnaround: valves sent for repair without an as-received test, losing critical information about their actual performance; set pressure adjusted on the test bench without correction for operating temperature or back pressure; seat leakage after reinstallation; plugged inlets and outlets in coking, polymerizing, and fouling services; corrosion of springs and internals in sour services; isolation valves inadvertently left closed after maintenance; and intense time pressure to complete hundreds of valves within a short shutdown window. The course is anchored in the requirements of API 576 for the inspection of pressure-relieving devices and links them in practical terms to the complementary standards engineers work with every day: API 520 for sizing, selection, and installation; API 521 for pressure-relieving and depressuring systems and flare systems; API 526 for flanged steel pressure relief valves; API 527 for seat tightness testing; API 510 for pressure vessel and protective device inspection programs; API 580 and API 581 for risk-based inspection; and ASME Section XIII for overpressure protection rules, together with material requirements for sour service in refineries. The course covers conventional and balanced bellows spring-loaded valves, pilot-operated valves, rupture disks, and pressure/vacuum vents for storage tanks, with a focus on the inspection and testing methodology for each device type rather than theory alone. The course is delivered in a classroom setting using an interactive, application-focused approach that compensates for field work through intensive practical tools. These include worked examples of cold differential test pressure calculations, analysis of real as-received test results, simulation of inspection, testing, and setting steps through presentations, videos, and photographs of damaged components, review of actual installation drawings, datasheets, and inspection records, and case studies of failures and incidents involving safety valves. Participants leave with a field inspection checklist, a shop repair and testing work procedure, an inspection and test report template, a justified methodology for setting inspection intervals, and an improvement plan for the pressure-relieving device program in their facilities.
