Course Overview

The Safety Valves: Design, Inspection, Testing, Calibration & Maintenance per API 576 Training Course provides a comprehensive, practical approach to the complete life cycle of safety and pressure relief valves, from design, selection, and installation through inspection, maintenance, repair, testing, calibration, and performance management. Safety valves and pressure relief valves are critical safeguards protecting pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping systems, fired heaters, and other process equipment from overpressure in refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas facilities, power plants, and other industrial environments. Their failure to open, open at the correct pressure, reseat, or remain leak-tight can lead to equipment rupture, loss of containment, fires, unplanned shutdowns, and environmental releases. The course is anchored in the requirements of API 576 and links them to the complementary standards used in pressure-relieving systems, including API 520 for sizing, selection, and installation, API 521 for pressure-relieving and depressuring systems, API 526 for flanged steel pressure relief valves, API 527 for seat tightness testing, API 510 for inspection programs, API 580 and API 581 for risk-based inspection, and ASME Section XIII for overpressure protection. Participants examine conventional and balanced bellows spring-loaded valves, pilot-operated valves, rupture disks, and pressure and vacuum vents, with particular attention to set pressure, back pressure, inlet pressure loss, outlet piping, materials, and difficult refinery services such as coking, polymerizing, fouling, hydrogen, and sour service, and to how design and installation decisions directly affect valve performance, reliability, and maintenance needs. The maintenance and inspection component covers on-stream inspection, safe removal, as-received testing, disassembly, component inspection, lapping, repair, replacement, reassembly, cold differential test pressure calculation, set pressure and seat tightness testing, blowdown adjustment, test bench calibration, and return-to-service verification. Participants also learn to diagnose leakage, chatter, rapid cycling, corrosion, fouling, plugging, and spring and bellows failures, and to set inspection and maintenance intervals using service conditions, performance history, as-received test results, and risk-based inspection. The course is delivered in a classroom setting through an application-focused approach using worked calculations, technical drawings, datasheets, nameplates, inspection records, photographs of damaged components, test results, failure case studies, and practical simulations. Video demonstrations and step-by-step walkthroughs of inspection, testing, and setting procedures replace hands-on shop work, allowing participants to follow each stage of the valve life cycle using real field data. Participants leave with a safety valve inspection checklist, a maintenance and repair procedure, a testing and calibration workflow, an inspection and test report template, a safety valve historical record, a methodology for determining inspection and maintenance intervals, and a performance improvement plan for the pressure-relieving device program.
