Course Overview

This advanced practical training course develops the technical and safety competencies required for the safe operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of circuit breakers and switchgear in industrial facilities, power plants, utilities, and electrical distribution systems. It focuses on the construction, operating principles, protection functions, and maintenance requirements of low-, medium-, and high-voltage equipment. The course covers safe switching, isolation, verification of de-energized equipment, permit-to-work requirements, lockout/tagout, temporary grounding, and controlled return to service. Particular emphasis is placed on electrical hazards including arc flash, electric shock, short circuits, stored energy, and operational errors that can result in equipment damage or serious injury. Participants examine practical inspection and maintenance techniques for circuit breakers and switchgear, including contact condition, insulation systems, operating mechanisms, control circuits, interlocks, protection systems, and functional performance. The programme also develops systematic approaches to fault diagnosis, condition assessment, corrective maintenance, and failure prevention. Through practical exercises and realistic operating and maintenance scenarios, participants develop structured methods for improving equipment reliability, reducing unplanned failures, strengthening electrical safety, and managing maintenance activities effectively.

Learning Objectives
