Course Overview

The Rotating Equipment: Pumps, Compressors & Turbines Training Course equips mechanical, rotating equipment, maintenance, reliability, and operations engineers with an integrated, practical understanding of how pumps, compressors, and steam and gas turbines are selected, operated, maintained, monitored, and troubleshot to achieve safe, reliable, and efficient performance. Rotating equipment is at the heart of oil and gas production, refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and LNG, power generation, water and desalination, and industrial facilities. Failures of critical pumps, compressors, and turbines can shut down entire units, cause loss of containment and fires, and result in major production losses and repair costs, while poor operation and maintenance practices steadily erode efficiency and reliability. The course covers the three main families of rotating equipment and the auxiliary systems that support them, informed by widely used API standards for pumps, compressors, turbines, mechanical seals, lubrication systems, machinery protection, and installation. Participants learn centrifugal and positive displacement pump performance, system curves, net positive suction head and cavitation, and pump operation, and centrifugal, reciprocating, and screw compressor performance, surge and anti-surge control, capacity control, and common problems. The program then addresses steam turbine and gas turbine principles, components, control and protection systems, performance, and inspection and overhaul practices, followed by mechanical seals and dry gas seals, bearings, lubrication and seal oil systems, couplings, alignment, and balancing. Participants also examine installation and commissioning practices, condition monitoring and machinery protection, performance monitoring, troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis, and maintenance strategies to improve rotating equipment reliability. The course is delivered through equipment cutaways and schematics, performance curve and calculation exercises, operating and vibration data interpretation, and failure case studies. Participants leave with a rotating equipment selection and API standards guide, pump and compressor performance calculation worksheets, a troubleshooting guide for pumps, compressors, and turbines, a commissioning and start-up checklist, and a rotating equipment reliability improvement plan template.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of pumps, compressors, and turbines in process facilities and the consequences of rotating equipment failures on Day 1.
  • Apply widely used API standards for pumps, compressors, steam and gas turbines, mechanical seals, lubrication systems, machinery protection, and installation.
  • Evaluate centrifugal pump performance using pump and system curves and apply net positive suction head, cavitation, minimum flow, and parallel and series operation principles.
  • Evaluate positive displacement pumps, including reciprocating, rotary, and metering pumps, and their protection and pulsation requirements.
  • Analyze centrifugal compressor performance, surge, stonewall, anti-surge control, and capacity control.
  • Analyze reciprocating and screw compressor operation, including valves, packing, rider bands, capacity control, and pulsation.
  • Explain steam turbine principles, components, governing, extraction, trip, and overspeed protection systems.
  • Explain gas turbine principles, components, fuel and control systems, performance factors, and inspection and overhaul intervals.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical seals, dry gas seals, bearings, lubrication and seal oil systems, couplings, alignment, and balancing to improve reliability.
  • Apply correct installation, grouting, pipe strain control, commissioning, and start-up practices.
  • Monitor rotating equipment condition and performance using vibration, machinery protection systems, lubrication analysis, and process data.
  • Troubleshoot rotating equipment problems, conduct root cause failure analysis, and develop maintenance and reliability improvement strategies by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for mechanical engineers, rotating equipment engineers, maintenance engineers and supervisors, reliability engineers, and machinery technicians responsible for pumps, compressors, and turbines. It is also relevant for operations engineers and supervisors, process engineers, condition monitoring specialists, project and commissioning engineers, turnaround planners, and engineers moving into rotating equipment roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas production, refining, petrochemical, fertilizer, and chemical plants, gas processing, LNG, and pipeline compression facilities, power generation, water, and desalination plants, and industrial facilities, as well as engineering contractors, equipment manufacturers, and rotating equipment service providers.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how pumps, compressors, and turbines work and why they are critical to operations.
  • Apply the relevant API standards to rotating equipment specification and review.
  • Read and use pump performance and system curves correctly.
  • Prevent cavitation and operate pumps within safe limits.
  • Select and protect positive displacement pumps appropriately.
  • Understand compressor surge and how anti-surge systems prevent it.
  • Operate and maintain reciprocating and screw compressors effectively.
  • Describe how steam turbines are controlled and protected.
  • Describe how gas turbines operate and how their performance is maintained.
  • Improve seal, bearing, lubrication, alignment, and coupling reliability.
  • Commission, start up, and monitor rotating equipment correctly.
  • Diagnose rotating equipment problems and plan effective reliability improvements.
