Course Overview

The Road Safety, Defensive & Desert Driving Training Course equips drivers, field operations and maintenance teams, fleet supervisors, and HSE professionals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to drive safely on public roads and in desert and remote environments, and to manage work-related road transport risks. Many employees drive daily to reach plants, facilities, remote field sites, and pipeline routes extending across desert areas, respond to call-outs and breakdowns at night and during emergencies, operate tankers, heavy vehicles, and service vehicles, and carry out maintenance and repair work at the roadside. Most incidents associated with these activities can be prevented through safer driver behavior, well-maintained vehicles, sound journey planning, and effective fleet safety management. The course combines road safety principles with practical driving techniques. Participants learn the causes of road traffic incidents, Saudi traffic regulations, violations, and the penalty points system, and the principles of defensive driving, including safe following distance, visual scanning, blind spot management, safe overtaking, speed management, and hazard perception, with particular focus on the risks of driving liquid tankers, such as the effect of liquid surge on braking and cornering, rollover risk, and reversing and maneuvering in confined sites. The program then addresses daily driving risks such as fatigue, drowsiness, long-distance driving, night-time emergency call-outs, distraction, and mobile phone use, driving in sandstorms, dust, rain, flash floods, at night, and near camel crossings, pre-trip vehicle inspection, emergency response, and securing roadside work sites. Participants also develop desert driving skills for reaching remote sites and pipeline routes and learn journey management, driver management, road incident reporting and investigation, and fleet safety performance monitoring. The course is delivered through interactive sessions, real road incident case studies, hazard perception exercises, vehicle and tanker inspection practice, emergency scenario exercises, and journey planning workshops, with practical vehicle demonstrations where arranged. Participants leave with a pre-trip vehicle and tanker inspection checklist, a defensive driving quick reference guide, a desert safety kit checklist, a journey management plan template for remote sites, and a road incident reporting form.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the causes of road traffic incidents, including human, vehicle, road, and environmental factors, on Day 1.
  • Apply Saudi traffic regulations and understand traffic violations, penalties, and the penalty points system.
  • Apply defensive driving principles, including safe following distance, visual scanning, blind spot management, and safe overtaking.
  • Manage speed and calculate stopping distances for light vehicles and tankers under different conditions.
  • Apply safe driving techniques for liquid tankers and heavy vehicles, including managing liquid surge, preventing rollovers, and reversing and maneuvering safely.
  • Manage the risks of fatigue, drowsiness, long-distance driving, and night-time emergency call-outs, and eliminate distraction, including mobile phone use.
  • Drive safely in sandstorms, dust, rain, flash floods, and at night, and respond safely to camel and animal crossings.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections of vehicles and tankers and identify defects that affect safety.
  • Respond correctly to emergencies and secure roadside work sites during maintenance and repair activities.
  • Apply desert driving techniques to reach remote sites and pipeline routes, including four-wheel drive operation, tire pressure management, avoiding getting stuck and rollovers, and safe recovery and towing.
  • Prepare for desert journeys with appropriate safety kits, heat stress prevention, navigation, communication, and procedures for breakdowns or getting lost.
  • Apply journey management, driver management, incident reporting and investigation, and fleet safety monitoring practices by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for drivers of company vehicles, tankers, and heavy vehicles, operations and maintenance teams traveling to plants, facilities, field sites, and pipeline routes, call-out and breakdown response teams, and field staff driving four-wheel drive vehicles in desert areas. It is also relevant for fleet managers and supervisors, transport and movement coordinators, HSE professionals, supervisors responsible for employees who drive as part of their work, and contractor supervisors whose teams work on roads and at field sites. It is particularly valuable for professionals in utility and service companies with geographically distributed networks and facilities, energy and mining companies with field operations, operation, maintenance, and construction contractors, transport and logistics companies, and government entities whose employees travel between cities or to remote sites.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why road incidents happen and how most can be prevented.
  • Drive in compliance with traffic regulations and avoid violations.
  • Maintain safe distances, scan effectively, and overtake safely.
  • Adjust speed to conditions and understand stopping distances for light vehicles and tankers.
  • Drive tankers and heavy vehicles safely and reverse and maneuver without incidents.
  • Recognize fatigue and distraction and take effective preventive action, including during night-time call-outs.
  • Drive safely in sandstorms, rain, flash floods, and at night.
  • Inspect a vehicle or tanker before a trip and identify unsafe conditions.
  • Respond correctly in emergencies and secure roadside work sites.
  • Drive four-wheel drive vehicles safely on sand to reach remote sites and recover stuck vehicles safely.
  • Plan and prepare for safe journeys to remote and desert locations.
  • Report and investigate road incidents and support fleet safety management.
