The Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) Training Course equips risk managers, internal control professionals, compliance officers, internal auditors, and business managers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design, facilitate, and embed an effective risk and control self-assessment program. RCSA is a structured process through which business units and process owners identify the risks that could affect their objectives, evaluate the design and effectiveness of the controls in place, determine residual risk, and agree actions to address control gaps. In banks and financial institutions, government entities, ministries, public authorities, energy, oil and gas, and utility companies, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, and large corporations, RCSA is a core tool for strengthening first-line ownership of risk, supporting internal control and compliance, and providing management and boards with assurance. In many organizations, RCSA programs fail to deliver their intended value. Assessments may become annual form-filling exercises, risk descriptions may be vague, and controls may be listed without clear owners, frequencies, or evidence. Inherent and residual risk ratings may be inconsistent across units, control effectiveness may be self-rated optimistically without challenge, and identified gaps may not lead to timely action. RCSA results may be disconnected from incidents, key risk indicators, audit findings, and risk appetite, and reports may present large volumes of data without meaningful insight for decision makers. This course provides a structured and practical approach to RCSA, informed by internationally recognized risk management and internal control frameworks and established operational risk practice. Participants learn the purpose and benefits of RCSA, how it fits within enterprise and operational risk management and internal control, and the roles of the first, second, and third lines. The program covers RCSA methodologies, including workshop-based, questionnaire-based, and hybrid approaches, and process-based, risk-based, and objective-based designs, as well as scoping, planning, and preparing an RCSA cycle. Participants then learn how to map processes, write clear risk statements using cause, event, and consequence, assess inherent risk using calibrated rating scales, identify and document controls with their key attributes, evaluate control design and operating effectiveness, determine residual risk, and compare results with risk appetite. The course also addresses issue identification and action planning, second-line validation and challenge, integration of RCSA with incidents, key risk indicators, audit findings, and regulatory requirements, reporting and dashboards, facilitation skills for RCSA workshops, avoiding bias and optimistic ratings, using governance, risk, and compliance technology, and embedding and maturing the RCSA program. The course is delivered through an interactive, application-focused approach with process mapping exercises, risk statement and control documentation workshops, rating and calibration exercises, a simulated RCSA workshop, and case studies from different sectors. Participants leave with an RCSA methodology and planning template, a process and risk mapping template, a risk statement guide, calibrated risk rating scales, a control documentation and assessment template, an RCSA workshop facilitation guide, an issues and action plan tracker, an RCSA reporting dashboard design, and an RCSA program improvement plan.
