Course Overview

The Rigging & Lifting Operations Safety Training Course equips lift supervisors, riggers, signallers, crane and equipment operators, engineers, and HSE professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan, supervise, and execute lifting operations safely and in accordance with recognized international regulations and standards. Lifting operations are carried out daily in construction, oil and gas, petrochemical, power, utilities, ports, shipyards, manufacturing, and maintenance and turnaround activities. Dropped loads, crane overturning, rigging failures, contact with overhead power lines, and people being struck or crushed by loads remain among the most serious causes of fatalities and major equipment damage, and most incidents result from poor planning, incorrect load calculations, defective or misused rigging, unclear communication, and inadequate supervision. The course covers lifting operations from equipment and calculations to planning and execution. Participants learn the regulatory and standards framework for lifting equipment and operations, types of cranes and lifting equipment, and lifting accessories, including wire rope, chain, and synthetic slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts, swivels, and spreader and lifting beams. The program then addresses load weight estimation, center of gravity, sling angles, hitch configurations, working load limits, crane load charts, radius and capacity, outrigger loads and ground bearing pressure, and the planning of routine, complex, tandem, blind, and critical lifts, including lifts over live plant. Participants also examine roles and competence of appointed persons, lift supervisors, operators, riggers, and signallers, communication using hand signals and radios, pre-use checks and thorough examination of lifting equipment and accessories, discard criteria, weather and environmental limits, exclusion zones, power line clearances, dropped object prevention, documentation and lifting registers, and lessons from lifting incidents. The course is delivered through load and sling calculation exercises, crane load chart interpretation, lift plan development, rigging inspection exercises using photographs and sample equipment, signalling practice, and incident case studies. Participants leave with a lift planning template, a load and sling tension calculation worksheet, a rigging equipment inspection checklist, a crane pre-use and set-up checklist, and a critical lift review checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the hazards of lifting operations and the main causes of lifting incidents, drawing lessons from major incidents, on Day 1.
  • Apply recognized international regulations and standards for lifting equipment, lifting accessories, and lifting operations.
  • Identify types of cranes and lifting equipment, including mobile, crawler, tower, overhead, and pedestal cranes, hoists, and telehandlers, and their applications and limitations.
  • Select and use lifting accessories, including wire rope, chain, and synthetic slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts, swivels, and spreader and lifting beams.
  • Estimate load weights and centers of gravity and calculate sling tensions using sling angles and hitch configurations.
  • Interpret crane load charts and evaluate radius, boom configuration, capacity, outrigger loads, and ground bearing pressure.
  • Plan routine, complex, tandem, blind, and critical lifts, including lifts over live plant, and prepare lift plans.
  • Define the roles, responsibilities, and competence of appointed persons, lift supervisors, crane operators, riggers, and signallers.
  • Apply safe communication using standard hand signals and radio procedures.
  • Conduct pre-use checks and understand thorough examination requirements, marking, color coding, and discard criteria for lifting equipment and accessories.
  • Control environmental and site hazards, including wind, visibility, heat, ground conditions, exclusion zones, overhead power lines, and dropped objects.
  • Manage lifting documentation, registers, certification, and contractor lifting operations and apply lessons from lifting incidents by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for lift supervisors, appointed persons, riggers, signallers and banksmen, crane and lifting equipment operators, and construction and maintenance supervisors responsible for lifting operations. It is also relevant for mechanical, civil, and project engineers who plan lifts, HSE professionals, permit issuers, turnaround and shutdown coordinators, and contractor supervisors. It is particularly valuable for professionals in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, and fertilizer facilities, offshore installations, power generation, water, and utility plants, construction and infrastructure projects, ports, terminals, and shipyards, manufacturing and industrial facilities, and lifting, rigging, and maintenance contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the main hazards of lifting operations and how incidents occur.
  • Apply relevant regulations and standards to lifting activities.
  • Select appropriate cranes and lifting equipment for different tasks.
  • Select and use lifting accessories correctly.
  • Calculate load weights, centers of gravity, and sling tensions.
  • Read crane load charts and verify crane capacity and set-up.
  • Prepare lift plans for routine and critical lifts.
  • Perform their role in the lifting team competently.
  • Communicate clearly using hand signals and radios.
  • Inspect lifting equipment and accessories and remove defective items from service.
  • Control weather, ground, power line, and dropped object hazards.
  • Maintain complete lifting records and manage contractor lifting activities.
