Course Overview

The Reverse Osmosis (RO) & Desalination Plant Operations Training Course equips operators, process engineers, and supervisors with the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate, monitor, optimize, and troubleshoot reverse osmosis desalination plants reliably and cost-effectively. Desalination is a critical source of drinking and industrial water across the Gulf and in many water-scarce regions, and seawater and brackish water RO plants must deliver consistent water quality while controlling energy consumption, chemical costs, and membrane replacement. Membrane fouling and scaling, pretreatment upsets, algal blooms, and poor operating practices can quickly reduce production, degrade water quality, and shorten membrane life. The course covers the RO plant from intake to product water. Participants learn desalination technologies, feedwater chemistry and key quality parameters, and intake system design and operation, including screening, chlorination, and management of algal blooms. The program then addresses pretreatment through coagulation, dissolved air flotation, media filtration, ultrafiltration, cartridge filtration, dechlorination, and chemical dosing, followed by RO principles, membrane types, array and pass configurations, high-pressure pumps, and energy recovery devices. Participants also learn plant startup, shutdown, and flushing, data normalization and performance monitoring, fouling and scaling diagnosis, clean-in-place procedures, boron removal and second-pass systems, post-treatment and remineralization, brine management, energy optimization, instrumentation and control, maintenance, and chemical and high-pressure safety. The course is delivered through process schematics, operating data analysis, normalization exercises, and troubleshooting case studies. Participants leave with a feedwater and pretreatment monitoring checklist, an RO data normalization worksheet, a fouling and scaling diagnosis guide, a clean-in-place procedure template, and an RO plant performance and energy optimization checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze desalination technologies, including thermal and membrane processes, and the role of reverse osmosis in water supply on Day 1.
  • Interpret feedwater chemistry and quality parameters, including salinity, silt density index, turbidity, scaling indices, organics, and boron.
  • Apply intake system operation and control practices, including screening, chlorination, and algal bloom management.
  • Operate and optimize pretreatment systems, including coagulation, dissolved air flotation, media filtration, ultrafiltration, cartridge filtration, dechlorination, and antiscalant and acid dosing.
  • Apply reverse osmosis principles, including osmotic pressure, flux, recovery, salt rejection, and concentration polarization.
  • Explain membrane types, element and pressure vessel arrangements, and array, stage, and pass configurations.
  • Operate high-pressure pumps and energy recovery devices and evaluate their effect on specific energy consumption.
  • Apply safe startup, shutdown, flushing, and preservation procedures for RO systems.
  • Normalize RO operating data and monitor normalized permeate flow, salt passage, and differential pressure to assess performance.
  • Diagnose biofouling, scaling, colloidal and organic fouling, and membrane damage and plan clean-in-place procedures.
  • Manage second-pass and boron removal systems, post-treatment and remineralization, disinfection, and brine discharge.
  • Optimize energy use, maintenance, instrumentation and control, and safety in RO plant operations by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for desalination and water treatment plant operators, shift supervisors, process and operations engineers, and plant managers responsible for RO systems. It is also relevant for laboratory and water quality personnel, maintenance and instrumentation engineers and technicians, and engineers moving into desalination roles. It is particularly valuable for professionals in water and electricity utilities, independent water and power producers, municipal water authorities, industrial facilities using RO for process and boiler feed water, including oil and gas, petrochemical, power, and manufacturing plants, and desalination operation and maintenance contractors.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how reverse osmosis desalination works and how it compares with thermal processes.
  • Interpret feedwater quality data and identify fouling and scaling risks.
  • Operate intake systems and respond to algal bloom events.
  • Optimize pretreatment to protect RO membranes.
  • Understand how flux, recovery, and rejection affect RO performance.
  • Describe RO arrays, stages, and passes.
  • Operate high-pressure pumps and energy recovery devices efficiently.
  • Start up, shut down, and flush RO systems safely.
  • Normalize operating data and detect performance decline early.
  • Diagnose fouling and scaling and carry out effective membrane cleaning.
  • Manage post-treatment, boron removal, and brine discharge.
  • Improve energy efficiency, reliability, and safety in RO plant operations.
