This training course gives engineers from other disciplines, geoscientists, planners, finance staff, and managers a clear, practical understanding of reservoir simulation and the role it plays in oil and gas decisions. Rather than teaching how to run a simulator, the course explains what a simulation model is, how it is built, what it can and cannot tell you, and how its results should be read, questioned, and used in field development, investment, and reporting decisions. Participants will follow the full life of a simulation study, from the static geological model and rock and fluid properties to grids, upscaling, wells, and operating constraints. The course introduces relative permeability, capillary pressure, and fluid descriptions at concept level, compares black-oil, compositional, and other model types, and shows how model initialization and in-place volumes connect to material balance and simpler engineering checks. A major focus is placed on history matching and forecasting. Participants will learn what is matched and why, why several different models can reproduce the same history, how to judge match quality, and how development scenarios are translated into production profiles, recovery factors, and well and facility requirements. The course also covers uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, low, base, and high cases, probabilistic thinking, and the way simulation supports reserves and resources reporting. Through case studies, report reviews, and structured discussions, participants will build a checklist of red flags, hidden assumptions, and the right questions to ask simulation teams before approving plans, budgets, or bookings.
