Course Overview

The Reservoir Fluid Properties & Phase Behavior Training Course equips petroleum, reservoir, and production engineers with a practical understanding of how reservoir fluids behave from the reservoir to surface facilities and how fluid properties are measured, validated, modelled, and applied in engineering decisions. Accurate fluid characterization underpins reserves estimation, reservoir simulation, well performance, facility design, flow assurance, and enhanced oil recovery. Unrepresentative samples, inconsistent laboratory data, or poorly tuned fluid models can lead to significant errors in production forecasts, recovery estimates, and project economics. The course builds from fundamentals to application. Participants learn hydrocarbon composition and phase behavior principles, including phase diagrams, bubble and dew points, critical conditions, and retrograde condensation, and the classification of reservoir fluids into black oil, volatile oil, gas condensate, wet gas, and dry gas. The program then covers the properties of gases, oils, and formation waters, industry correlations, fluid sampling methods and representativity, laboratory PVT tests such as compositional analysis, constant composition expansion, differential liberation, constant volume depletion, and separator tests, and quality control and consistency checks of PVT reports. Participants also learn equation of state modelling and tuning, black oil and compositional fluid models, and applications in material balance, reservoir simulation, separator optimization, flow assurance, gas injection, and miscibility for enhanced oil recovery. The course is delivered through worked examples, Excel-based property calculations, PVT report reviews, and case studies. Participants leave with a reservoir fluid classification guide, a fluid sampling planning checklist, a PVT report quality control checklist, a fluid property correlation workbook, and an equation of state tuning workflow.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the role of reservoir fluid properties and phase behavior in reservoir, production, and facilities engineering decisions on Day 1.
  • Explain hydrocarbon composition and phase behavior of pure, binary, and multicomponent systems.
  • Interpret phase diagrams, including bubble point, dew point, critical point, cricondenbar, cricondentherm, and retrograde condensation.
  • Classify reservoir fluids as black oil, volatile oil, gas condensate, wet gas, or dry gas using field and laboratory data.
  • Calculate gas properties, including compressibility factor, formation volume factor, density, viscosity, and compressibility.
  • Calculate oil and formation water properties, including bubble point pressure, solution gas-oil ratio, formation volume factor, viscosity, and compressibility.
  • Apply and evaluate industry correlations for estimating fluid properties when laboratory data are limited.
  • Plan fluid sampling programs, including bottomhole, formation tester, and separator sampling, to obtain representative samples.
  • Interpret laboratory PVT tests, including compositional analysis, constant composition expansion, differential liberation, constant volume depletion, separator tests, and viscosity measurements.
  • Apply quality control and consistency checks to PVT data and reports.
  • Apply equation of state modelling, including plus-fraction characterization, lumping, and tuning, and select black oil or compositional models.
  • Apply fluid properties to material balance, reservoir simulation, separator optimization, flow assurance, gas injection, and miscibility assessment by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, production engineers, and PVT and laboratory specialists who use or generate reservoir fluid data. It is also relevant for reservoir simulation engineers, process and facilities engineers, flow assurance engineers, petrophysicists and geoscientists involved in fluid characterization, and new engineers joining reservoir and production functions. It is particularly valuable for professionals in national and international oil and gas companies, oilfield service and PVT laboratory companies, reservoir engineering and simulation consultancies, and regulators and government entities involved in reserves and reservoir management.
