The Refractory Installation, Inspection & Maintenance Training Course equips inspection, maintenance, and project engineers, supervisors, and QA/QC personnel with the practical knowledge needed to select, install, inspect, and maintain refractory linings that protect high-temperature equipment and ensure safe, reliable operation. Refractory linings are essential in fired heaters, boilers, fluid catalytic cracking units, sulfur recovery units, reformers, incinerators, stacks and ducts, and kilns and furnaces in the oil and gas, petrochemical, power, cement, steel, and aluminum industries. Refractory failures can cause hot spots, shell overheating, equipment damage, unplanned shutdowns, and safety incidents, and many of these failures originate from poor material selection, installation, curing, or dryout. The course covers refractories from materials and design to installation, inspection, and repair, informed by widely used industry practices for refractory installation quality control. Participants learn refractory types, including bricks, castables, plastics, ramming and gunning mixes, mortars, and ceramic fiber products, their key properties, and lining and anchoring design. The program then addresses installation methods, including casting, gunning, ramming, and brick laying, mixing and water control, curing, and dryout and heat-up schedules, as well as quality control through installer qualification, material testing, sample testing, and inspection hold points. Participants also examine in-service monitoring using infrared thermography and shell temperature surveys, shutdown inspection techniques, refractory failure mechanisms, repair methods, turnaround planning, contractor management, and health and safety considerations, including dust, silica, ceramic fibers, confined spaces, and hot work. The course is delivered through case studies of refractory failures, installation and inspection exercises, dryout schedule reviews, and turnaround planning workshops. Participants leave with a refractory selection guide, an installation quality control and inspection test plan template, a dryout and heat-up checklist, an in-service and shutdown inspection checklist, and a refractory repair and turnaround planning template.
