Course Overview

The Refinery Planning & Economics (LP Modelling) Training Course equips refinery planners, economists, process engineers, and commercial professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to understand refinery economics and use linear programming models to optimize crude selection, operations, and product slates. Refinery profitability depends on thousands of interacting decisions: which crudes to buy, how to run process units, how to blend products to specification, and when to sell or export. Linear programming models are the primary tool used to evaluate these decisions, yet their results are only as good as the model structure, data, and interpretation behind them. The course combines refinery economics with hands-on LP modelling. Participants learn the drivers of refinery margins, including crude and product prices, crack spreads, yields, operating costs, and complexity, and how crude assays, crude valuation, and breakeven analysis support crude selection. The program covers refinery configurations, process unit yields and constraints, product specifications and blending, and the fundamentals of linear programming, including objective functions, variables, constraints, marginal values, reduced costs, and sensitivity analysis. Participants then examine refinery LP model structure, including crude and process submodels, delta-base representation, recursion for nonlinear blending, and hydrogen and fuel balances, and apply models to strategic, annual, and monthly planning, turnaround and investment studies, backcasting and model validation, plan-versus-actual analysis, and the growing impact of emissions and carbon costs. The course is delivered through worked examples and hands-on exercises using an Excel-based refinery LP model, with reference to the approach used in commercial refinery planning tools. Participants leave with a refinery margin analysis template, a crude valuation and breakeven worksheet, a simplified refinery LP model, an LP results interpretation guide, and a plan-versus-actual and margin improvement checklist.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze the drivers of refinery economics, including crude and product prices, crack spreads, yields, operating costs, and margins, on Day 1.
  • Evaluate refinery configurations, complexity, and the role of process units in determining product yields and value.
  • Interpret crude assays and apply crude valuation and breakeven analysis to support crude selection.
  • Explain process unit yields, capacities, operating constraints, and their representation in planning models.
  • Apply product specifications and blending principles for gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, and other products.
  • Apply linear programming fundamentals, including objective functions, decision variables, constraints, and feasibility.
  • Interpret LP results, including marginal values, reduced costs, ranging, and sensitivity analysis.
  • Describe refinery LP model structure, including crude and process submodels, delta-base representation, recursion, and hydrogen and fuel balances.
  • Build and run a simplified refinery LP model in Excel to optimize crude slate, unit operations, and product slate.
  • Apply LP models to strategic, annual, and monthly planning, turnaround impacts, and investment and margin improvement studies.
  • Validate models through backcasting and conduct plan-versus-actual analysis to identify margin gaps.
  • Evaluate the impact of emissions, carbon costs, and energy transition trends on refinery planning and economics by the end of Day 5.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for refinery planners and schedulers, planning and economics engineers, process engineers and technologists, and crude and product traders and supply professionals involved in refinery optimization. It is also relevant for commercial and business development professionals, financial analysts, strategy and investment professionals, and managers who use refinery planning results for decision making. It is particularly valuable for professionals in refineries and integrated refining and petrochemical companies, national oil companies, crude and product trading and marketing organizations, energy ministries and regulators, and engineering and consulting firms supporting refinery projects. Participants should be comfortable using Excel; prior LP experience is not required.

Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how refineries make money and what drives margins.
  • Assess how refinery configuration affects profitability.
  • Use crude assays to value crudes and compare alternatives.
  • Describe how process units and constraints are represented in planning models.
  • Apply product specifications and blending rules in planning.
  • Formulate simple linear programming problems.
  • Interpret marginal values, reduced costs, and sensitivity results.
  • Explain how refinery LP models are structured and why recursion is needed.
  • Build and use a simplified refinery LP model in Excel.
  • Use LP models for planning, turnaround, and investment decisions.
  • Validate LP models and analyze plan-versus-actual performance.
  • Consider emissions and carbon costs in refinery planning.
